vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is very proud to offer this absolutely beautiful 1978 Z28 that is in terrific original condition and priced to sell. This Survivor Z28 features the numbers matching original 350 engine, original numbers matching M21 Close Ratio 4-speed manual transmission, and is truly special being a one owner car with very low actual miles of 49,095. Throughout the entire F-Body market right now, this is one of the nicest and most desirable Camaros available. This stunning Z28 features a nice professional repaint with new correct decals (summer 2014), a near mint original black custom vinyl interior, original low mile drive line with 4 speed manual transmission, and several original documents such as build sheet, car invoice, car inspection checklist, and other items from when the car was sold new. Please note when viewing these documents below that the previous owner's name, Mr. Ramsey, appears on all the original documentation and is shown as the previous owner on the current title pictured below. This is an excellent verification of the one owner history of this Camaro.

This Z28 is very solid and clean as one can see in the many photos of the underside and other specific photos of the areas most prone to rust, the car has always been stored inside and was not rusty before the one repaint. It looks great, runs awesome, and is fun to drive, especially rowing through the gears on a beautiful day. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Z28 that is ready to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable value. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come. This Z28 is finished in the beautiful and desirable color combinations of Bright Blue Metallic over Black Custom Vinyl interior. This is the factory original color scheme as verified on the trim tag pictured below. The low mileage is verified not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, showing the mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos, comprehensive video, the list of numbers, and information below to get a true sense of clean, correct, and original this Camaro really is.

As a side note, this Camaro is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our classics come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did. We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a question about the Camaro, just give us a call.

model description

After 4 years of the extruded aluminum bumpers, an all new body color urethane front & rear fascia was finally added to the car. Intended to debut in 1976, production delays held up the restyle until this year. Now hidden behind the sleek new nose was the impact absorbing crash structure able to withstand greater than 5MPH impacts. The rear tail lights were redesigned as well, now incorporating 3-color lenses on either side of the fuel door in the center. The license plate was relocated to a molded in section of the rear bumper. The Camaro wasn't just continuing to blow the competition away on the street, but it beat the rival Mustang in the showroom again, outselling the Ford 247,437 to 179,039. There was no competition.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description
VIN 1Q87L8N510850 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM.  The "Q" is the model level, correct for Z28.  The "87" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe.  The fifth digit is the engine, L, correct for an 350ci car.  The sixth digit, "8," indicates the model year, 1978.  The "N" is the plant where the car was produced, Norwood, OH.  The last five digits are a sequence number for each plant so this is the 10,850th Camaro made in Norwood for 1978.
Body Build Date 09D "09" is the ninth month of the year and "D" is the fourth week of the month meaning this Camaro's body build date is the fourth week of September, 1977.
Engine Code V0916 "V" means the engine was built in the Flint, MI plant.  The "09" is the ninth month of year and the "16" is the sixteenth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on September 16, 1977.
Suffix Code CHS This is the code for a 1978 Camaro with the 350ci engine and a manual transmission, which is correct for this car. The Camaro "White Book" incorrectly lists this code for a 350ci with an automatic transmission. After more research we have verified the error in that book and that the CHS code is correct for a Camaro with a manual transmission.
Engine VIN Stamping 510850 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 510850, are stamped on the engine pad meaning this engine is original to this car. This stamping is also pictured below.
Engine Block Casting Number 3970010 The engine block has the 3970010 casting number.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 346249 The intake manifold is correct with a 346249 casting number.
Intake Manifold Casting Date I 10 7 "I" is September, "10" is the tenth day of the month, and "7" is the last digit of the calendar year so the intake was cast on September 10, 1977.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Distributor 1103353 The distributor is correct with 1103353 stamped on the housing.
Distributor Date Code 7 G 25 The "7" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "G" denotes july, and "25" is the twenty-fifth day of the month meaning the distributor was made on July 25, 1977.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the engine.
Carburetor Main Body

17058203

The original carburetor has the correct stamping for a 1978 350ci Chevrolet with no a/c and manual transmission.  The fourth digit, "5," means the carb was built for 1976-79 production run.  The fifth digit,  "8," means it was built for the 1978 model year.  The six digit, "2," indicates that it is a 4BBL carb.  The seventh digit,  "0," means is was built for the Chevrolet division of GM. The eighth digit, "3" means it was built for a car with a manual transmission.
Carburetor Date Code 2577 The first three digits, "257" indicate the 257th day of the year.  The last digit, "7" is the model year it was produced, 1977.  So the carb  was stamped on September  14, 1977.
Transmission Main Case Casting # 1304 065 903 The main case of the transmission has the correct 13 04 065 903 casting number.
Transmission Casting Date 8.22.77 The transmission has 8.22.77 cast into the main case, which indicates it was cast on August 22, 1977.
Transmission Date Stamp WJ1972 The "W" indicates this is a Borg Warner transmission.  The "J" is the month it was made, September. The "19" is the ninteenth day of the month.  The "7" is the year, 1977. The last digit, "2," indicates that it was made during the second shift. So the transmission was assemebled on September 19, 1977.
Transmission VIN Stamp 510850 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 510850, are stamped on the main case of the transmission meaning this transmission is original to this car.
Alternator 1102394 The distributor is correct for a non a/c Camaro with 1102394 stamped on the housing.
Alternator Date Code 7 J 3 The "7" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "J" denotes September, and "3" is the third day of the month meaning the alternator was made on September 3, 1977.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the engine.
Windshield AG "A" is September and "G" is 1977 so this window is original, made in September of 1977.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Driver's Window TG "T" is August and "G" is 1977 so this window is original, made in August of 1977.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Passenger's  Window AG "A" is September and "G" is 1977 so this window is original, made in September of 1977.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Rear  Window UG "U" is July and "G" is 1977 so this window is original, made in July of 1977.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.

condition

Exterior

The Bright Blue Metallic exterior is in beautiful condition. One professional repaint with new decals over original sheet metal was performed on this Z28 this summer and it looks and shows very well. The car was very rust free prior to the repaint and no rust repair was needed, just some minor door dings and rock chips needed addressed. The decals are correct GM replacements and really look splendid on the car. As one can see in the photos, the paint has a brilliant gloss and deep shine. Often times many Z28 Camaro's will have particularly chipped up front ends, as one can see in the photos this car does not and the low front end is in excellent shape. Both urethane bumpers are original and in great condition with no spider webbing or flaking paint. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There may be a few blemishes around the car that were too faint to show up in the photos, but nothing that is really noticeable from about five feet away. The BF Goodrich tires are in like new condition with approximately 90% tread left. The original rally wheels were just painted as well and are in excellent shape, shine nicely, and have no curb rash. The trunk is very solid and rust free and nicely detailed with original correct trunk mat and original space saver spare tire.

The Camaro looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALL of the glass on this Camaro is date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of the fourth week of September 1977 (09D). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The original Black custom vinyl interior of this Z28 looks utterly splendid. The original seat covers look excellent with no rips, split seems, or signs of excessive wear. Please note that these are the original seats not some cheap aftermarket covers or  replacements. The carpet appears to be recently replaced and is in excellent condition with no stains, tears, or holes. The original dash is in good condition with no dash cracks or fading. There are two places where the sun has caused the dash to warp a bit, which is very common on these Camaro's. The am/fm 8 track radio still works, but it a bit touchy. Most importantly, the dash remains uncut and unmolested after all these years preserving the originality of this fine Z28. All of the interior lights and gauges work as they should, with the obvious exception of the clock. The original door panels look fantastic with no excessive wear, and both door pulls are solid and in tact. The Headliner is in excellent shape with no stains or sagging. The package tray appears to be original and is in great condition with no fading or warping. This car has no aroma of cigarettes what so ever. These Z28 interiors are not know to wear well and the excellent condition of this original interior is a testament to the meticulous care and attention this car has received throughout its life.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Z28 is in great mechanical condition and all of the accessories work. Much care has gone into keeping this car in excellent original condition and factory correct. It is an exceptional driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that it shifts well, there are no strange vibrations, and the car performs quite nice overall. It starts right away every time, idles well, and runs excellent. The car shifts well and the clutch feels good. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. This Z28 features the upgraded F41 sport suspension and the coveted Posi-traction rear axle with 3.73 gears. Also, the engine is clean and nicely detailed as one can see from the photos. There is no smoke when driving the car. If it has been sitting for an extended period of time then there is a little smoke when it is first started, but it goes away after about 2 minutes of driving. This would indicate the car would need valve guide seals at some point in the future, which is very frequent on low mileage examples such as this car. Luckily, the valve guide seals are very easy to replace and only cost about $20. The horn works and all the interior and exterior lights, all gauges(except clock), wipers, and blower for the heater work as they should (heater core has been bypassed). The speedometer, tachometer, odometer, oil pressure, fuel, and battery gauges all work as they should. This Z28 has true dual exhaust with no catalytic converter and has a nice healthy exhaust note at idle and cruising speeds. This exhaust system was upgraded by the original owner in 2007 per included sales receipt. The original owner also added exhaust headers back in 1979 and they are still on the car today and work well but have a slight exhaust leak on the passenger side, which is very common with headers. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the 4-speed transmission on a beautiful day.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1978 Z28 is in excellent well preserved original condition. Numbers matching is getting extremely important in Camaro pricing, especially with rare and desirable models like this Z28 with the 4-Speed transmission. The originality, rarity, one owner history, original documentation, very low original miles, and the great extent to which the numbers match make this car especially important and hard to duplicate. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell. This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes. The value of these second generation "F-Body" cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson and Mecum stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
