vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is very proud to offer this absolutely beautiful 1978 Camaro Rally Sport that is in terrific condition inside and out and priced to sell. This Rally Sport features the numbers matching original V8 engine, a 4-speed manual transmission, factory build sheet and many other original documents, and is truly special being a very rare 1978 Camaro Rally Sport. This stunning Camaro features a beautiful professional repaint with new correct decals, a fully restored black vinyl interior, incredible original rally wheels, new true dual Magnaflow exhaust, and a very solid rust free body and frame. We have the judging form and scoring sheets from a 2010 Vintage Chevrolet Club of America event where this car was judged. It scored extremely high with a 961 out of a possible 1000 points.

This Rally Sport is very solid and clean as one can see in the many photos of the underside. We have also included other specific photos of the areas most prone to rust to show how clean this car is. The car has always been stored inside and was not rusty before the one repaint. It looks great, runs awesome, and is fun to drive, especially rowing through the gears on a beautiful day. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Camaro that is ready to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable value. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come. This Rally Sport is finished in the beautiful and desirable color combinations of Red and Black two tone paint over Black Vinyl interior. This is the factory original color scheme as verified on the trim tag and build sheet both pictured below. Please peruse all of the photos, the comprehensive video, the list of numbers, and information below to get a true sense of clean, correct, and original this Camaro really is.

This Camaro was originally sold in Portland, OR. It was owned by the same gentleman in Oregon from April 1983 to 2005 when it was sold to the most recent owner who we bought the car from.

As a side note, this Camaro is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our classics come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did. We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a question about the Camaro, just give us a call.

model description

After 4 years of the extruded aluminum bumpers, an all new body color urethane front & rear fascia was finally added to the car. Intended to debut in 1976, production delays held up the restyle until this year. Now hidden behind the sleek new nose was the impact absorbing crash structure able to withstand greater than 5MPH impacts. The rear tail lights were redesigned as well, now incorporating 3-color lenses on either side of the fuel door in the center. The license plate was relocated to a molded in section of the rear bumper. The Camaro wasn't just continuing to blow the competition away on the street, but it beat the rival Mustang in the showroom again, outselling the Ford 247,437 to 179,039. There was no competition.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description
VIN 1Q87U8L566616 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM.  The "Q" is the model level, correct for Rally Sport.  The "87" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe.  The fifth digit is the engine, U, correct for an 305ci car.  The sixth digit, "8," indicates the model year, 1978.  The "L" is the plant where the car was produced, Van Nuys, CA.  The last five digits are a sequence number for each plant so this is the 66,616th Camaro made in Van Nuys for 1978.
Body Build Date 03A "03" is the third month of the year and "A" is the first week of the month meaning this Camaro's body build date is the first week of March, 1978.
Engine Code T0214 "T" means the engine was built in the Tonawanda plant.  The "02" is the second month of year and the "14" is the fourteenth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on February 14, 1978.
Suffix Code CTH This means the motor was intended for a 305ci V8 Camaro with a manual transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping 566616 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 566616, are stamped on the engine pad meaning this engine is original to this car. This stamping is also pictured below.
Engine Block Casting Number 460776 The engine block has the 460776 casting number.
Engine Block Casting Date B 7 8 "B" is February, "7" is the seventh day of the month, and "8" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine block was cast on February 7, 1978, which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 346260 The intake manifold is correct with a 346260 casting number.
Intake Manifold Casting Date A 18 77 "A" is January, "18" is the eighteenth day of the month, and "78" is the calendar year so the intake was cast on January 18, 1978.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Distributor 1103281 The distributor is correct with 1103281 stamped on the housing.
Distributor Date Code 7 H 29 The "7" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "H" denotes August, and "29" is the twenty-ninth day of the month meaning the distributor was made on August 29, 1977.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the engine.
Carburetor Main Body

17058121

The original carburetor has the correct stamping for a 1978 350ci Chevrolet with a/c and manual transmission.  The fourth digit, "5," means the carb was built for 1976-79 production run.  The fifth digit,  "8," means it was built for the 1978 model year.  The seventh digit,  "0," means is was built for the Chevrolet division of GM. The eighth digit, "3" means it was built for a car with a manual transmission.
Carburetor Date Code 300 7 The assembly date code for the 1978 model year starts with the first day of the calendar year in 1977 and continues through the calendar year in 1978. This means "300" is the 300th day starting with January 1, 1977. The "7" is the year the carb was produced, which indicates the carburetor is dated October 27, 1977.

condition

Exterior

The Red and Black exterior is in fully restored beautiful condition. One professional repaint with new decals over original sheet metal was performed on this Rally Sport and it looks stunning. The car was very rust free prior to the repaint and no rust repair was needed according to the previous owner, just some minor door dings and rock chips needed addressed. The decals are correct GM replacements and really look splendid on the car. As one can see in the photos, the paint has a brilliant gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. Often times many Camaro's will have particularly chipped up front ends, as one can see in the photos this car does not and the low front end is in excellent shape. Both urethane bumpers are original and in great condition with no spider webbing or flaking paint. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There may be some very faint blemishes around the car that were too small to show up in the photos, but nothing that is really noticeable from about five feet away. The tires are in brand new condition with 100% tread left. They were literally just installed and sized 225/70/14. The original rally wheels were painted body color as well and are in excellent shape, shine nicely, and have no curb rash. The trunk is very solid and rust free and nicely detailed with a correct trunk mat and original space saver spare tire, jack and jack accessories. All weather-stripping has been replaced on this car including: window seals, door seals, window sweeps, and trunk seal.

The Camaro looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The Black vinyl interior of this Rally Sport looks utterly splendid. The seats look excellent with no rips, split seems, or signs of excessive wear. The carpet appears to be recently replaced and is in excellent condition with no stains, tears, or holes. The original dash is in excellent condition with no dash cracks or fading, and is not warped in the middle and backside like most other Camaro's of this era. The original style radio is still installed in its factory position but is currently not working. Most importantly, the dash remains uncut and unmolested after all these years preserving the originality of this fine Rally Sport. All of the gauges work as they should, with the obvious exception of the clock. The new door panels look fantastic with no excessive wear, and both door pulls are solid and in tact. The Headliner is in excellent shape with no stains or sagging and was recently replaced with a new headliner board as well. The package tray was just replaced too and is in new condition with no fading or warping. This car has no aroma of cigarettes what so ever. Both front seat belts operate well and retract correctly, which is a very common problem on GM cars from this era and a small detail many buyers do not check. These Camaro interiors are not know to wear well and the excellent condition of this interior is a testament to the meticulous care and attention this car has received throughout its life.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Rally Sport is in great mechanical condition. It is an exceptional driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that it shifts well, runs great, there are no strange vibrations, and the car performs quite nice overall. It starts right away every time, idles well, and runs excellent. The car shifts well and the clutch feels good. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. This Camaro really handles nicely. Also, the engine is clean and nicely detailed as one can see from the photos. There is no smoke when driving the car. The blower for the heater and a/c works as do the wipers, the speedometer, tachometer, odometer, fuel, and battery gauges all work as they should. This Rally Sport has true Magnaflow dual exhaust with no catalytic converter and has a nice healthy exhaust note at idle and cruising speeds. This exhaust system was just upgraded from exhaust manifolds to exit tail pipes and is in excellent condition as one can see in the underside photos below. The a/c compressor will sometimes kick on, but it has not been properly tested due to the extremely cold temperatures here this winter. One can see the compressor engaging in the video below. The previous owner did mention that the system worked as it should the last time he used the AC. There is a very slight exhaust leak on the passenger side. The parking brake works and hold the car, but the release can be a little finicky, the horn does not work. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the 4-speed transmission on a beautiful day.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1978 Rally Sport in excellent condition. Numbers matching is getting extremely important in Camaro pricing, especially with rare and desirable models like this Rally Sport with the 4-Speed transmission, and as one can see this car is very original and correct. The restored condition, rarity, build sheet, original documentation, and the great extent to which the numbers match make this Camaro especially important and hard to duplicate. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell. This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes. The value of these second generation "F-Body" cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson and Mecum stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
