vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is very proud to offer this spectacular 1966 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe in beautiful condition. It looks amazing in blue, runs great, and is an excellent driver that is ready to be enjoyed. This Corvette is priced to sell, always turns heads, and gets a TON of attention going down the road. The car is finished in the beautiful and highly desirable color combination of Blue over Bright Blue Vinyl. Please peruse all of the photos, numbers, video, and information below to get a true sense of how nice, clean, and striking this Corvette really is.

In addition to the fantastic color combination this car is very well optioned with sidepipes and knock off wheels.  It also has a modern air conditioning system installed that works well and blows cold. These modern air conditioning systems are much much more efficient that the original air conditioning from 1966 and do a considerably better job of keeping the passenger compartment cool. Also, the system is very discretely installed and almost looks like it came with the car stock.

This Sting Ray comes with a wealth of records for service and maintenance over the years that are pictured below. The receipts total over $13,000. There is a stamping with last six digits of the VIN on the engine pad and pictured below; please view the breakdown of numbers below for more information on the numbers.

The Corvette is dressed and detailed as an L79 327ci 350hp model.  It has many L79 components and looks like an L79 under the hood with Corvette seven finn aluminum valve covers and a correct 3890490 winters aluminum intake manifold for a 327ci 350hp L79 1966 Sting Ray. The tach is for a 350hp Corvette with a 6000 rpm redline and the backside of the gauge cluster has the correct sticker with "LC" on it for an L79 350hp. It also has a 1111156 distributor that is dated January 1966, which is also correct for a 1966 L79.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did. We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 194376S116482 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM. The "94" is the series, Corvette. The "37" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe, The sixth digit, "6," indicates the model year, 1966. The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis. The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 16,482nd Corvette made for 1966, which places this Corvette's build date in March of 1966.
Body Build Date H04 "H" corresponds to March, and the "04" is the fourth day of the month meaning this Corvette's body build date is March 4, 1966.
Engine Code F03I6 "F" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.  The "03" is the third month of year and the "16" is the sixteenth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on March 16, 1966.  This date should be prior to the body build date.
Suffix Code HE This means the motor was intended for a 327ci 300hp Corvette with a manual transmission.
Engine Block Casting Number 3858174 The engine block has the correct 3858174 casting number for a 1966 small block Corvette, this block was only used in 1966.
Engine Block Casting Date C 2 6 "C" is March, "2" is the second day of the month, and "6" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine block was cast on March 2, 1966.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Engine VIN Stamping 116482 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 116482, are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below. To me, the font and style of the numbers on this stamping are not consistent with other VIN stampings I have observed from this era.
Transmission Main Case Casting Number 3885010 The main case of the transmission has the correct 3885010 casting number.
Transmission Tail Housing Casting Number 3857584 The extension housing of the transmission has the correct 3857584 casting number, which is correct for a Corvette made after February 1965.
Transmission Side Cover Casting Number 3884685 The side cover of the transmission has the correct 3884685 casting number.
Transmission Date Code P 0304 The "P" is the prefix that indicates this as a Muncie 4-Speed Transmission. The "03" is the third month of the year and the "04" is the fourth day of the month so this transmission was assembled on March 4.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 3890490 The Winters aluminum intake manifold has the correct 3890490 casting number for a 1966 L79 Corvette.
Distributor 1111156 The distributor is correct for a 1966 L79 with a 1111156 stamping on the band.
Distributor Date Code 6A31 The "6" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "A" denotes January, and "31" is the thirty-first day of the month meaning the distributor was made on January 31, 1966.
Alternator 1100693 The alternator is correct for a 1966 Corvette small block without a/c with a 1100693 stamping
Alternator Date Code 6B25 The "6" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "B" denotes February, and "25" is the twenty-fifth day of the month meaning the alternator was made on February 25, 1966.
Bell Housing Casting Number 3858403 The clutch housing has the correct 3858403 casting number for a small block Corvette.
Rear Differential AP 3 1 66 The "AP" is a code for 4.11:1 gear ratio with positraction, however the car does not feel or drive like it has 4.11 gears. The "3" should be the third month of the year, the "1" is the first day of the month, and the "66" is 1966 so the rear end should have been made on March 1, 1966.
Driver's Window YJ "Y" is October and "J" is 1965 so this window was made in October of 1965.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Driver's Vent Window YJ "Y" is October and "J" is 1965 so this window was made in October of 1965.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Passenger Window YJ "Y" is October and "J" is 1965 so this window was made in October of 1965.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Passenger Vent Window YJ "Y" is October and "J" is 1965 so this window was made in October of 1965.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Rear Window YJ "Y" is October and "J" is 1965 so this window was made in October of 1965.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.

condition

Exterior

The blue exterior is in fantastic driver condition. As one can see in the photos the finish has dazzling gloss, deep shine, and smooth finished. The chrome bumpers and other bight work on the car looks wonderful with a brilliant finish and no rust or pitting. Both doors open and shut nicely. The knock off wheels are in excellent condition with a nice finish and no curb rash. The original style bias ply tires and correctly sized 7.75x15 with 95% tread left. There are some very tiny blemishes in the paint around the car that were too faint to show up in photos, but nothing that is really noticeable from about five or ten feet away. The frame and everything else on the car is completely solid. I encourage you to closely inspect the many underside photos to see how truly clean the car is. There are absolutely no rust issues with the car what so ever and the underside looks great.

Window Date Codes

Please note that almost all the glass on this car, the door glass, rear glass, and even both vent windows are date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of March 4, 1966 (H07). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

This Corvette looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The Bright Blue interior of the Corvette is in outstanding condition. The seats look lovely with no holes, splits, or excessive wear. They are not worn in the typical area where the driver gets in and out. The carpet is in great condition with no rips or holes. The chrome and other brightwork inside the car has a terrific finish and looks great overall. The dash and console are in nice condition with no fading or sun damage. The gauge faces are nice and clean and the lenses are crisp and clear. The original AM-FM radio sounds great, most importantly the dash has never been cut or modified for and aftermarket installation. The power antenna works with a little hand. The door panels are in excellent condition, fit to the door well, the door pulls are solid, and there no cracks on the arm pad. The excellent condition of the this interior is a huge testament to the meticulous care and attention this car has received throughout the years.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in very good mechanical condition. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idles well. The car is an awesome driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can see the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, shifting thought all the gears, braking to stoplight, accelerating away, and going through some curves. Please note that it shifts properly, there are no strange vibrations, and the car performs quite well overall. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. The transmission shifts well and does not pop out of gear. The clutch feels good. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed as one can see in the photos.

The horn works as do all the exterior lights, radio, indicators, and wipers. All of the gauges work and even the clock runs. The aftermarket air conditioning works well and blows cold. One can observe the a/c compressor clicking on and engaging properly in the video below. The fan for the heater and a/c works on all speeds. The dash lights work as one can see in the video. The headlights and brights work, but the headlight buckets must be raised by hand. Please note that this car has original style bias ply tires that do no perform like modern radials. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with 4-speed transmission.

Overall
Condition

Overall, this 1966 Corvette is in excellent driver condition. We have this Corvette priced to sell. Mid-year (C2) Corvettes are, and will continue to be, the most collectable and desirable Corvette generation. Of the mid-years the 1965-67 models always draw a premium and drive so much better due the the 4 wheel disk brakes. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector. While this is not a Bloomington Gold or NCRS Top Flight restoration, it is a very high quality driver that is very correct and ready to be enjoyed. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is very apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please email or call with any questions.
