vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is very proud to offer this beautiful, completely numbers matching, 1972 Corvette Coupe with the original high performance LS5 454ci big block engine, original M21 Close Ratio 4-Speed transmission, air conditioning, and only 40,080 original miles. This Corvette has been treated to a complete mechanical and cosmetic "nut and bolt" frame off restoration. There are photos documenting the restoration and receipts totaling over $61,000. The car was literally taken down to the bare frame and completely rebuilt with a new paint, interior, engine rebuild, transmission rebuild, suspension rebuild, etc.

In addition to the LS5 454ci engine and M21 transmission this Corvette is absolutely loaded with almost option available in 1972. It was ordered with a/c, power steering, power brakes, AM-FM stereo radio, tilt/telescopic steering column, factory custom leather interior, white letter tires, rear window defroster, luggage rack carrier, a dealer installed GM compass, and a dealer installed GM fire extinguisher. The GM compass and GM fire extinguisher are still with the car today.

In addition to the documentation of the restoration there is some original paperwork with the car such as a copy of the original title from 1972 and the original retail order form from 12-31-71 verifying all the highly desirable options and dealer installed options such as the compass, fire extinguisher, and luggage rack. Please view the very end of the video where we show the binder of receipts and documentation.

This Corvette looks absolutely stunning, runs terrifically, and is an awesome driver that is ready to be enjoyed. There is no way a similar Corvette could be built or restored for anything near our asking price. Please peruse all of the photos, video, numbers, and other information below to get a true sense of how exceptionally nice this Corvette really is.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did. We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z37W2S517553 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM. The "Z" is the series, Corvette. The "37" is the body style, sport coupe. The fifth digit is the engine, W, correct for an LS5. The sixth digit, "2," indicates the model year, 1972. The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis. The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 17,553th Corvette made for 1972.
Body Build Date H29 "H" corresponds to March, and the "29" is the twenty-ninth day of the month meaning this car has a body build date of March 29, 1972.
Engine Code T0327 "T" means the engine was build in the Tonawanda plant.  The "03" is the third month of year and the "27" is the twenty-seventh day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on March 27, 1972. .
Suffix Code CSR This means the motor was intended for an LS5 454ci application with a manual transmission, which is correct for this car.

Engine Block Casting Number 3999289 The engine block has the correct 3999289 casting number.
Engine Block Casting Date B 23 72 "B" is February, The "23" is the twenty-third day of the month, and the "72" is the calendar year so the engine block was cast on February 23, 1972.
Carburetor Main Body

Please note that this car has a very rare and original Quadrajet produced by Carter.
7042217 The carburetor has the correct stamping for a 454ci LS5 Corvette with a 4-Speed transmission. The "70" is a code used on all Rochester carbs from 1965-1975. The third digit, "4," means the carb was built in the 1970's. The fourth digit, "2," means it was built for the 1972 model year. The fifth digit, "2," indicates that it is a 4BBL carb. The sixth digit, "1," means is was built for the Chevrolet division of GM. The last digit, "7," means it was intended for use in a manual transmission car such as this.
Carburetor Date Code H1 The "H" is August and "1" is the last digit of the calendar year so the carburetor was made in August of 1971.
Transmission Main Case 3925661 The main case of the transmission has the correct 3925661 casting number.
Transmission Side Cover Casting # 3952648 The side cover of the transmission has the correct 3952648 casting number.
Transmission Tail Housing 3978764 The tail housing of the transmission has the correct 3978764 casting number.
Transmission Date Code P2T03B The "P" indicates that this is a Muncie transmission. The "2" indicates the model year, 1972. The "T" is the twelfth month of the year and the "03" is the third day of the month. The "B" is a suffix letter that indicates the gear ratio, 2.20:1 Close Ratio. So this is a Muncie Close Ratio 4-Speed transmission that was assembled on December 3, 1971.
Transmission VIN Stamping 517553 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 517553, are stamped on the main case meaning this transmission is original to this car.
Clutch Housing Casting Number 3899621 The clutch housing is correct with a 3899621 casting number.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 6263753 The intake manifold has a correct 6263753 casting number for a 1972 LS5.
Intake Manifold Casting Date C 23 72 "C" is March, The "23" is the twenty-third day of the month, and the "72" is the calendar year so the intake manifold was cast on March 23, 1972.
Expansion Tank 3019249 The original brass Harrison surge tank has the correct 3019249 stamping.
Expansion Tank Date Code 72A "72" is 1972 and "A" represents January so the surge tank is dated January of 1968.
Distributor 1112051 The distributor is original and correct for an LS5 with a 1112051 stamping on the band.
Distributor Date Code 1K6 The "1" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "K" denotes October, and "6" is the sixth day of the month meaning the distributor was made on October 6, 1971. This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Exhaust Manifold LH 3969869 The left exhaust manifold has a 3969869 casting number, which is correct for a 1972 Corvette with an LS5 big block.
Exhaust Manifold RH 3880828 The right exhaust manifold has a 3880828 casting number, which is correct for a 197 Corvette with an LS5 big block.
Rear Differential AW W 077 E 1 The "AW" indicates a 3.08:1 gear ratio with positraction. The "W" is the plant where it was produced, Warren, MI. The "077" is the seventy-seventh of the year, the "E" is the source of the positraction, Eaton, and the "1" is the shift in which the rear end was made.. So the rear end was made on March 17, 1972 in Warren, MI during the fist shift.
Driver's Window LY "L" is March and "Y" is 1972 so this window is original, made in March of 1972. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Passenger Window LY "L" is March and "Y" is 1972 so this window is original, made in March of 1972. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Rear Window XY "X" is February and "Y" is 1972 so this window is original, made in February of 1972. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.

condition

Exterior

The Elkhart Green exterior is in beautiful condition. As one can see in the photos the finish has dazzling gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. The wheels and center caps are in excellent condition with a nice finish and no curb rash. The tires are literally brand new and correctly sized 225/70R15. There are a few very small blemishes and a chip by the driver's door handle with a specific picture below, but nothing that is noticeable from five feet away. As one can see in the many photos of the underside of the car, this Corvette is totally solid. The bottom of the car is exceptionally clean and correct with appropriate markings; the car looks nearly as good underneath as it is on top.

The Stingray looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The Saddle interior of the Corvette looks superb. The seats look just as good in person as they do in the photos. The carpet is also great condition with no tears, rips, or holes. This included the rear carpet which is often neglected. The dash and console are in terrific condition with no fading or sun damage. The radio sounds great, most importantly it is a Corvette specific unit made for this car do the dash was not cut or modified for the installation. The door panels are in great condition with no cracks or wear. This car has not been smoked in and there is no aroma of cigarettes whatsoever.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in very good mechanical condition. The engine was rebuilt during the restoration and the car has been used sparingly since. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idles well. The car drives terrifically. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 65mph, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that there are no strange noises or vibrations and the car performs quite well overall. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. This Corvette has plenty of power and is very fast with the the LS5 454ci engine. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean, detailed, and correct as one can see in the photos.

The horn works as do all the exterior lights, wipers, and all gauges (including the clock), rear window defroster, and the a/c blows cold. Even very detailed items work like the seat belt buzzer, it goes on with the key and then goes off when the seat belt is pulled out or when the parking brake is applied. The entire vacuum system for the headlights and wiper door works correctly from both their respective switches on the dash and the override switches. The entire operation from both switches can be viewed in the video below. The blower for the heater and a/c works on all speeds. One can observe the a/c compressor clicking on and engaging properly in the video. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the 4-Speed, the extra power fro the LS5, and the T-tops out on a beautiful day.

The car runs and drives as well as it looks.

Overall
Condition

Overall, this 1972 454ci Big Block Corvette is in marvelous condition. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing, especially with rare and desirable models like this LS5, and as one can see above this car is quite correct. There are photos below of the VIN and date stamps on the engine block and the transmission. In my opinion and based on our experience the "Chrome Bumper" cars from 1968-1972 are the most collectible and hottest in the entire Corvette market right now. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector.

The originality, matching numbers, frame off restoration, and beautiful color combination make this car especially important and difficult to duplicate. There is no way someone could restore a 1972 Corvette to this level of quality for anywhere near our asking price. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is very apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased drastically over the past years. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please email or call with any questions.
