vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is proud to offer this numbers matching 1972 Corvette in excellent driver condition. This Corvette looks great, runs awesome, and is a wonderful driver that feels great on the road. This Corvette is "Numbers Matching" meaning that the engine that is in the car now is the same one that was installed in the car new at the factory. The last six digits of the VIN, 500573, are stamped on the engine pad, which is pictured below. The transmission is also original with the last six digits of the VIN stamped on the main case and pictured below.

We have this car priced to sell and are offering an excellent opportunity to own a very desirable Corvette at an unbeatable value. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come as the market on "chrome bumper" C3 Corvettes from 1968-1972 is absolutely red hot right now, out of those years we have found the 1969 and 1972 to be most desirable. Please peruse all of the photos, video, the extensive list of numbers, and other information below to get a true sense of how nice this Corvette really is.

We purchased this Corvette from a gentleman who had owned the car for 7 years. He said that he was the third owner of the car and that lovingly maintained and cared for this Stingray throughout his ownership; it was always stored indoors and only driven on nice days. Some of the maintenance and service he had performed on the car includes all new brake calipers and master cylinder this year, a new high quality paintjob four years ago, and a virtually completely new interior.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their car to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

model description

The 1972 Corvette was truly the end of an era. 1972 was the last year to feature chrome bumpers and the "egg crate" grill, it is considered to be the last year of truly classic Corvettes. Years after were more at the mercy of insurance companies, fuel prices, and emission concerns, 1972 is considered the last "good" year. It was also the last year to feature a pop out rear window, and the first year that the way horsepower ratings are measured changed from gross to the more accurate net. As in investment, the 1972 will always have an advantage and out perform other years because of its precedence as the end of a a very great period for Corvette and muscle cars as a whole.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z37K2S500573 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM. The "Z" is the series, Corvette. The "37" is the body style, sport coupe. The fifth digit is the engine, K, correct for a 200hp car. The sixth digit, "2," indicates the model year, 1972. The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis. The last five digits are a sequence number so this is only the 573rd Corvette made for 1972.
Build Sequence 573 Based on the VIN this is the 573th Corvette made for the 1972 model year, which places the car's build date in August of 1972.
Engine Code V08I6 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.  The "08" is the eighth month of year and the "I6" is the sixteenth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on August 16, 1971.  This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car.
Suffix Code CKX This means the motor was intended for a 350ci 200hp Corvette with an automatic transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping 500573 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 500573, are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car.
Engine Block Casting Number 3970010 The engine block has a correct 3790010 casting number a 1972 Corvette.
Engine Block Casting Date H 9 1 "H" is March, "9" is the ninth day of the month, and "1" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine block was cast on August 9, 1971.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 6263751 The intake has the correct 6263751 casting number for a 1972 Corvette.
Intake Manifold Casting Date H 11 1 "H" is March, "12" is the twelfth day of the month, and "1" is the last digit of the calendar year so this cylinder head was cast on August 12, 1971.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Carburetor 7042203 The "70" is a code used on all Rochester carbs from 1965-1975. The third digit, "4," indicates it was made in the 1970 to 1975 production run. The fourth digit, "2," is the model year, 1972. The fifth digit, "2," indicates that it is a 4BBL Quadrajet carb. The seventh digit, "0," means is was built for the Chevrolet division of GM. The last digit, "3," means it was intended for use in a manual transmission car.
Distributor 1112050 The band on the distributor has the correct 1112050 number for a 1972 Corvette.
Distributor Date Code 1 H 2 The "1" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "H" denotes August, and "2" is the second day of the month meaning the distributor was made on August 2, 1971. This is correct it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Left Cylinder Head Casting Number 3978487 The left cylinder head is correct with a 3978487 casting number.
Left Cylinder Head Casting Date H 12 1 "H" is March, "12" is the twelfth day of the month, and "1" is the last digit of the calendar year so this cylinder head was cast on August 12, 1971.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Right Cylinder Head Casting Number 3978487 The right cylinder head is correct with a 3978487 casting number.
Right Cylinder Head Casting Date H 12 1 "C" is March, "13" is the thirteenth day of the month, and "2" is the last digit of the calendar year so this cylinder head was cast on March 13, 1972.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Exhaust Manifold LH 3932461 The left exhaust manifold has a 3932461 casting number, which is correct for a 1972 200hp Corvette.
Exhaust Manifold RH 3932461 The right exhaust manifold has a 3932461 casting number, which is correct for a 1972 200hp Corvette.
Transmission 72-CK The "72" is the model year, 1972. The "C" means the transmission was made for a Chevrolet vehicle, and the "K" means is was intended for a 350ci Corvette, which is correct for this car.
Transmission Date Code 200 The assembly date code for the 1972 model year starts with the first day of the calendar year in 1971 and continues through the calendar year in 1972. This means "290" is the 200th day starting with January 1, 1971, which indicates the transmission is dated July 19, 1971.
Transmission VIN Stamping 500573 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 500573, are stamped on the main case of the transmission and pictured below meaning this transmission is original to this car.
Rear Differential AW W 222 E 1 The "AW" is a code that indicates a 3.08:1 gear ration with positraction. This is actually a 1971 model code, but since this is such an early 1972 it is totally plausible that it could have come on this car from the factory. The "W" is the assembly plant, Warren, MI. The "222" is the 222nd day of the year, the "E" indicates the positraction source, Eaton, and the "1" is the shift in which the rear end was made. So this rear differential was made in Warren, MI on August 10, 1971 during the first shift.
Starter 1108434 The starter has the correct 3899621 number for a 1969 Corvette.
Starter Date Code 1 G 13 The "1" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "G" denotes July, and "13" is the thirteenth day of the month meaning the starter was made on July 13, 1971.
Windshield UN The "U" denotes July and the "N" denotes 1971 meaning the windshield was made in July of 1971. This is correct as it predates the body build date.
Drivers Window IN The "I" denotes June and the "N" denotes 1971 meaning the driver's side window was made in June of 1971. This is correct as it predates the body build date.
Passenger Window IN The "I" denotes June and the "N" denotes 1971 meaning the passenger side window was made in June of 1971. This is correct as it predates the body build date.
Rear Window LN The "L" denotes March and the "N" denotes 1971 meaning the rear window was made in March of 1971. This is correct as it predates the body build date.

condition

Exterior

The Classic White exterior is in excellent driver condition. As one can see in the photos, the finish has fantastic gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. The car was painted 4 years ago according to the previous owner; it has been used sparingly since then and still looks gorgeous. The wheels are in great shape with a nice finish and absolutely no curb rash on the beauty rings. The tires are literally brand new with less than 20 miles on them. The chrome and other bight work on the car looks good overall. There are a couple nicks that have been touched up and a few other small imperfections around the car that are too tiny to show up in pictures, but nothing else that is really noticeable from five feet away. We have included many photos of the underside of the car to show how clean it is and specific photos of the areas most prone to rust. This Corvette has no rust issues. The frame is totally solid around the "key hole" area in front of the rear tire and we have seen no evidence of corrosion around the windshield or "birdcage." These are the most notorious spots for rust on a C3 Corvette.

This Corvette looks as good in person as it does in the photos.

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALL the glass on this Corvette, the "Astro Ventilation" door glass, the removable rear window, and even the windshield are date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of August 1971. Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The Red interior of the Corvette is in fantastic condition and almost completely new. The seats were recently recovered and looks brand new with no rips or split seams. Please note that according to the previous owner these are genuine leather seats, not some cheap aftermarket material. The carpet is in "like new" condition as well with no holes or stains. This includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The door panels look like new with no cracking or splits. The radio works well and the speakers in the back were covered to match the carpet and could easily be removed if the future owner wanted. The dash has a cap on it that looks brand new with no cracks or sun fading. The "A" pillar trim on the passenger side does show wear on the top from the T-Top latch. The jack and handle are present and stored correctly behind the passenger seat and pictured below showing the original decals on the compartment door, but there is no tire in the clam shell. Please note that the lap belts and shoulder belts retract properly. This is a very common problem on this era Corvette and a small, but very important, detail most buyers do not think to check.

The interior looks as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in good mechanical condition. The engine starts right away every time and runs well. The car is a great driver that feels nice the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, shifting through all the gears, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that there are no strange noises or vibrations and the car performs quite well overall. All of the gauges work with the obvious exception of the clock and the oil pressure gauge is stuck. The brakes are responsive with all new calipers and master cylinder, there is an initial pull to the right. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast. Also, the engine compartment is clean and detailed as one can see in the photos. The exterior lights, indicators, and horn all work. The blower motor for the heater and a/c works on all speeds except high. The entire vacuum system for the headlights and wiper door works from both of their respective switches on the dash and override switches; their complete operation from both switches can be viewed in the video. The wiper door works, but the wipers do not. There is a coolant leak that we have noticed when the car is warm, it did not leak coolant just sitting the garage. The a/c does not work and the previous owner said it needs a new compressor, which is available from Rockauto for $173.79. The power windows work, but the driver's side is slow near the top. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with T-tops out on a beautiful day.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1972 Corvette is in wonderful driver condition. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing and as one can see, this car is quite correct. There are photos below of the VIN stamp on the engine block, suffix code, engine assembly date, and transmission codes. This is a very early 1972 model made during the first month of production. Since this car does not have a trim tag the build month is easily determined by the production sequence of the VIN as well as the original sticker in the door jam showing a "8-71" production date. In my opinion and based on our experience the "Chrome Bumper" cars from 1968-1972 are the most collectible and hottest in the entire Corvette market right now and out of those years 1969 and 1972 are the most sought-after. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
