vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is glad to offer this beautiful numbers matching 1972 Corvette Coupe in nice driver condition with a 4-Speed manual transmission. This Corvette looks good, runs well, and drives great. The drivetrain on this Corvette is "Numbers Matching" with the last six digits of the VIN stamped on the engine pad, which is pictured below, indicating the engine is original to the car. The transmission is also original with the last six digits of the VIN stamped on the main case and pictured below.

This Stingray is absolutely loaded with highly desirable original options such as air conditioning, power steer, upgraded factory "Custom" interior, and the 4-speed manual transmission.

We have this car priced to sell and are offering an excellent opportunity to own a very desirable Corvette at an unbeatable value. It is very hard to find a nice driving 1972 Corvette for anything under $20,000, let alone a nice numbers matching car with a 4-Speed and A/C like this Stingray. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come as the market on C3 "chrome bumper" Corvettes from 1968 to 1972 is absolutely red hot right now and on the rise. Please peruse all of the photos, video, list of numbers, and other information below to get a true sense of how nice this Corvette really is.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their car to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

model description

The 1972 Corvette was truly the end of an era. 1972 was the last year to feature chrome bumpers and the "egg crate" grill, it is considered to be the last year of truly classic Corvettes. Years after were more at the mercy of insurance companies, fuel prices, and emission concerns, 1972 is considered the last "good" year. It was also the last year to feature a pop out rear window, and the first year that the way horsepower ratings are measured changed from gross to the more accurate net. As in investment, the 1972 will always have an advantage and out perform other years because of its precedence as the end of a a very great period for Corvette and muscle cars as a whole.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z37K2S523561 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM. The "Z" is the series, Corvette. The "37" is the body style, sport coupe. The fifth digit is the engine, K, correct for a 200hp car. The sixth digit, "2," indicates the model year, 1972. The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis. The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 23,561st Corvette made for 1972.
Body Build Date K12 "K" corresponds to June, and the "12" is the twelfth day of the month meaning this Corvette's body build date is June 12, 1972.
Engine Code V0511 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.  The "05" is the fifth month of year and the "11" is the eleventh day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on May 11, 1972.  This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car.
Suffix Code CKW This means the motor was intended for a 350ci 200hp Corvette with a manual transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping 523561 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 523561, are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car.
Engine Block Casting Number 3970014 The engine block has a correct 3790014 casting number a small block 1972 Corvette.  Please note that this casting number was only found on 1972 Corvettes with a late build date, which is correct for this car.
Engine Block Casting Date D 17 72 "D" is April, "17" is the seventeenth day of the month, and "72" is the calendar year so the engine block was cast on April 17, 1972. Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Transmission Main Case Casting Number 3925661 The main case of the transmission has the correct 3925661 casting number.
Transmission Tail Housing Casting Number 3978764 The tail housing of the transmission has the correct 3978764 casting number.
Transmission Side Cover Casting Number 3952648 The side cover of the transmission has the correct 3952648 casting number.
Transmission Date Code P2B2 The "P" indicates that this is a Muncie transmission. The "2" indicates the model year, 1972. The "E" is the fifth month of the year and the "2" is the second day of the month. So this is a Muncie 4-Speed transmission that was assembled on May 2, 1972.
Transmission VIN Stamping 523561 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 523561, are stamped on the main case of the transmission and pictured below meaning this transmission is original to this car.
Bell Housing 3899621 The bell housing has the correct 3899621 casting number.
Rear Differential LR W 155 E 1 The "LR" indicates a 3.36:1 axle ratio with positraction. The "W" is the plant code where the rear end was made. The "155" is the 155th day of the year. The "E" is the source of the positraction, Eaton, and the "1" is the shift so the rear differential was made on June 3, 1972 in Warren, MI during the first shift.
Windshield LY The "L" is March and the "Y" is 1972 so the windshield is original, made in March of 1972. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Driver's Window JY The "J" is June and the "Y" is 1972 so this window is original, made in June of 1972. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Passenger Window JY The "J" is June and the "Y" is 1972 so this window is original, made in June of 1972. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Rear Window LY The "L" is March and the "Y" is 1972 so this window is original, made in March of 1972. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.

condition

Exterior

The Classic White exterior is in decent driver condition. As one can see in the photos, the finish has nice gloss and good shine. Both doors open and shut nicely. The wheels and center caps are in excellent condition with a brilliant finish. The tires do show some age, but have plenty of tread left. As one would expect from a paintjob with this many years on it there are some touch ups and other imperfections that are visible in the photos and some that are too tiny to show up in pictures. It would be best if any perspective buyer could view the car in person and see the paint as, especially with the white paint, not all of the blemishes are visible in the photos. The frame is totally solid around the "key hole" area in front of the rear tire, which is the most common spot for rust on a C3 Corvette. We have included many photos of the underside of the car to show how it looks.

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALL of the glass on this Corvette, the windshield, the "Astro Ventilation" door glass, and even the pop out rear window is date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of June 12, 1972 (K12). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The Saddle interior of the Stingray is in great condition. The seats look just as good in person just as they do in the photos with no excessive wear, holes or split seams. The seats are not worn in the typical area where the driver gets in and out. The carpet is in good condition condition as well with no holes or rips. This includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The gauge faces are clean and crisp. The door panels are in great shape with no splits and no cracks in the common spot where the driver's elbow rests. The original radio is still with the car, it does not work, but most importantly the dash has never been cut or modified for an aftermarket installation. The dash and console are in great shape with no cracks, fading, or sun damage. This Corvette has never been smoked in; there are no burns marks and no aroma of cigarettes at all.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in good mechanical condition. The car is a nice driver that feels good the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, shifting through all the gears, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that there are no vibrations and the car performs quite well overall. The car runs cool and does not overheat. The transmission shifts well, does not pop out of gear, and the shifter is tight. The clutch feels good. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed as one can see in the photos. All of the gauges work with the obvious exception of the clock. As with many older carbureted cars it is a bit cold blooded. The entire vacuum system for the headlights and wiper door works correctly from both their respective switches on the dash and the override switches. They go up quickly and with no binding in the mechanism. The entire operation from both switches can be viewed in the video. There are some bugs with the car the could be worked out and some room for improvement with a tune-up, but the car performs in person as it does in the video. The blower for the heater and a/c and the horn do not work. I would encourage any perspective buyer to look at the car in person or have it inspected if possible to get the best sense of how it runs. This Corvette has a high performance HEI distributor that was specifically made for a Corvette so it has a tach drive to keep the tachometer functional. The car is a pleasure it is to drive, especially with 4-Speed transmission and the T-tops out on a beautiful day.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1972 Corvette is in nice driver condition. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing and as one can see, this car is quite correct. There are photos below of the VIN stamp on the engine block, suffix code, engine assembly date, transmission date, and transmission VIN stamp. The previous owner told us the mileage was original and the title shows the mileage as correct and "actual," but we have no other documentation or evidence of the low mileage. In my opinion and based on our experience the "Chrome Bumper" cars from 1968-1972 are the most collectible and hottest in the entire Corvette market right now. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
