model description

The 1973 Corvette was truly the end of an era. 1973 was the last year to feature a chrome bumper and is considered by some to be the last year of truly classic Corvettes. Model years after were more at the mercy of insurance companies, fuel prices, and emission concerns, 1973 is considered the last "good" year by many enthusiasts. The 1973 model year is also considered a special and different year for Corvette enthusiasts as it was the only model to have chrome in the back and a rubber bumper in the front. It is representative of the transition Corvette was making at the time. As in investment, the 1973 will always have an advantage and out perform other years because of its precedence as the end of a a very great period for Corvette and muscle cars as a whole.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z37J3S428810 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM. The "Z" is the series, Corvette. The "37" is the body style, sport coupe. The fifth digit is the engine, J, correct for an L48 Corvette. The sixth digit, "3," indicates the model year, 1973. The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis. condition

Exterior

The white exterior is in excellent driver condition. As one can see in the photos the finish has dazzling gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. The car was repainted with a little bit of pearl in the paint, which really sets off the color and looks great; white can sometimes be a little boring on a Corvette and this really improves the looks. The chrome bumpers loos like brand new and the other bight work on the car shows very well. The wheels and center caps are in excellent condition with a nice finish and no curb rash on the beauty rings. As with many Corvettes of this era the fit of the windows to the T-tops is not perfect. Often Corvettes will have particularly chipped up front ends, this car does not. There are no major blemishes that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There are some small imperfections around the car and some that were too faint to show up in photos, but nothing that is really noticeable from about five feet away. As one can see in the many photos of the underside of the car this Corvette is totally solid with no rust issues.  We have included specific photos below of the spots on the frame that are most prone to rust such as the "key hole" area in front of the rear tire.

This Corvette looks as good in person as it does in the photos.

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALL of the the glass on this car, even the windshield, is date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of May 30, 1973 (J30). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The Dark Saddle interior of the Corvette looks absolutely superb. The seats look almost brand new with no split seems, rips, or signs of excessive wear. The carpet is also great condition with no rips or holes. This includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The dash and console are in terrific condition with no cracks, fading, or sun damage. The door panels are in excellent condition with no splits or cracks. The T-top headliners are not warped or sagging. In one of the rear storage compartments the previous owner installed a new modern head unit for the car with Bluetooth, CD Player, and iPod hookups. This was a very clean installation and he was very conscientious about keeping the car the original. He did not want to dash or take away from the look of the interior so he kept the stock radio in place. There is a remote to operate the new radio, which is very convenient. He said that the original radio works fine, but he just wanted some better sound quality the ability to play music from is phone, CDs, and iPod. The cup holder on the console can be easily removed and is mounted by two of the stock screws for the console so nothing on the car was modified for the installation. This car has not been smoked in and there is no aroma of cigarettes whatsoever. Also, please note that both seat belts operate and retract properly. This is a very common problem on this era Corvette and a small, but very important, detail most buyers do not think to check.

The interior looks as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in good mechanical condition. It runs well and idles smooth. The car is an excellent driver that feels nice the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, shifting through all the gears, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that it shifts well, there are no strange vibrations, the brakes do not pull, and the car performs quite well overall. The transmission shifts smoothly. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other, however please keep in mind that these are manual brakes so they do not perform like a modern Corvette. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast. All of the gauges work with the obvious exception of the clock. The lights, indicators, and wipers all work. The horn works from a button on the dash. The blower motor for the heater and a/c will work, but makes a lot not noise. The car has always started for us, but the ignition switch and starter are a bit finicky and temperamental. The headlights pop up and vacuum system for the lights works correctly from both the switch on the dash and override switch. The a/c system is complete with compressor, condenser, and all the lines in place, but there is no belt on the compressor and the a/c does not work. The true dual exhaust system has a very healthy tone. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with T-Tops  out on a beautiful day.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1973 Corvette is in great driver condition. Numbers matching is very important in Corvette pricing and as one can see this car is very correct. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell. The value of third generation Corvettes has increased dramatically in recent times, this is especially true for the 1973 model year. They are solid and wise investments for a collector. 1973 was a very special and one year only body style for Corvette that is always recognizable with the newer front end treatment and the classic chrome bumpers on the back. While this is not an NCRS Top Flight or Bloomington Gold car, it is a very nice driver quality Corvette and a great car for the money. There are photos below of the VIN stamp on the engine block, suffix code, engine assembly date, transmission VIN stamp, transmission date, and transmission codes. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
