vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is glad to offer this low mileage and completely numbers matching 1978 Silver Anniversary Edition Corvette that is an excellent driver and priced to sell. The car is totally solid and rust free and has a recent beautiful professional paint job. It runs great and is a blast to drive. The Corvette is finished in the beautiful and highly desirable color combination of RPO B27 Silver Anniversary Two Tone over Mahogany Cloth interior, which is the correct and original color combination as verified by the codes on the trim tag, pictured below and also the original window sticker enclosed. Most Anniversary Edition Corvettes have Oyster interior. Mahogany is much more rare, striking, and attractive in my opinion. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Corvette that is ready to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable value. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal work and effort. The low mileage is supported not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title that states the mileage as, "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos, numbers, and video below to get a true sense of how original and correct this Corvette really is

Please notice that all 1978 Corvettes wore the "25th Anniversary" badge. However, only certain cars, such as this example, were the actual Silver Anniversary Editions with the Silver Anniversary regular production order (RPO), "B2Z." This is verified by the trim tag that is pictured below showing the paint to be 13 for the bright Silver upper sections and 07 for the Dark Gray lower section, which was only used in 1978 and only for the B2Z Corvettes, on the darker lower portion. The B2Z option is also verified by the original window sticker, which is pictured below.

This Corvette is completely "Numbers Matching" and virtually every part we checked on the car is correct. We have run the numbers on hundreds of Corvettes and there are very few that are so many correct and original components with correct numbers and dates. The last six digits of the VIN are stamped on the engine pad, which is pictured below, and the engine is original to the car. The transmission is also original with the last six digits of the VIN stamped on the main case and pictured below.

Included with the car is a great amount of original documentation and dozens of receipts, an original title from 1982, and other bits of the car's history. The original window sticker is still with car, which is especially important for this Corvette as it verifies as original the many highly desirable options like the B2Z paint, FE7 Gymkhana suspension, and YJ8 Aluminum wheels. The original new car inspection form from Brown Co Motors, where the car was sold new is still with this Corvette along with the original warranty book, original owners manual, EPA fuel sticker, battery pamphlet, battery information, consumer information booklet, and blower motor information form, which all came with the car when it was sold new.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their car to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

model description

Chevrolet marked Corvette's 25th Anniversary in 1978 with the most extensive redesign of the car since the introduction of the C3 body style in 1968. The new Corvette introduced a large fastback style rear window that drastically increased luggage space in the rear compartment behind the seats. The interior of the 1978 was also significantly redesigned. The speedometer and tachometer were redesigned in a more square and vertical mode. A glove box was added on the passenger side to replace the pocket. The door panels were also completely new and included screw on arm rests to replace the molded style that been the standard since 1965. 1978 Corvettes featured special 25th Anniversary emblems specific to that year.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. Most of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z87L8S425526 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM.  The "Z" is the series, Corvette.  The "87" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe.  The fifth digit is the engine, L, correct for an L48 car.  The sixth digit, "8," indicates the model year, 1978.  The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis.  The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 42,526th Corvette made for 1978.
Body Build Date I05 "I" corresponds to May, and "05" is the fifth day of the month meaning this Corvette's body build date is May 5, 1978.
Engine Code V0424 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.  The "04" is the fourth month of year and the "24" is the twenty-fourth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on April 24, 1978.  This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car.
Suffix Code CUT This means the motor was intended for an L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping 425526 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 425526, are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car.
Engine Block Casting Number 3970010 The engine block has the correct 3970010 casting number, which is correct for a 1978 Corvette.
Engine Block Casting Date D 1 8 "D" is April, "1" is the first day of the month, and "8" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine block was cast on April 1,1978.
Distributor 1103353 The distributor is original and correct for an L48 Corvette with a 1103353 stamping.
Distributor Date Code 8 B 20 The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "B" denotes February, and "20" is the twentieth day of the month meaning the distributor was made on February 20, 1978. This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 346249 The intake manifold has the correct 346249 casting number.
Intake Manifold Casting Date C 27 8 "C" is March, "27" is the twenty-seventh day of the month, and "8" is the last digit of the calendar year so the intake manifold was cast on March 27, 1978.
Carburetor

Please note that this car has a very rare and original Quadrajet produced by Carter
17058204 The original carburetor has the correct stamping for a 1978 L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission and a/c. The fourth digit, "5," means the carb was built in the 1976 - 1979 production run. The fifth digit, "8," means it was built for the 1978 model year. The six digit, "2," indicates that it is a 4BBL carb. The seventh digit, "0," means is was built for the Chevrolet division of GM. The last digit, "4," means it was intended for use in an automatic transmission car such as this.
Carburetor Date Code 758 The firth two digits, "75," indicate the 75th  day of the year. The last digit, "8," is the year in which the carburetor was produced, 1978.  So this carburetor was stamped on March 16, 1978.
Transmission Date Code B8D26D The "B" means the transmission as build in the Parma plant. The "9" is the year, 1978. The first "D" is the fourth month of the year and the "13" is the thirteenth day of the month. The second "D" is the shift in which the transmission was made. This would mean the transmission was made during the day shift in Parma on April 26, 1978.
Transmission VIN Stamp 425526 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 425526, are stamped on the main case of the transmission and pictured below meaning this transmission is original to this car.
Alternator 1102908 The alternator is original and correct for a Corvette that has a/c with a 1102908 stamping.
Alternator Date Code 78 D 12 The "78" is the year, the "D" denotes April, and "12" is the twelfth day of the month meaning the Alternator was made on April 12, 1978.
Windshield GJ "G" is April and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in April of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Driver's Window GJ "G" is April and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in April of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Passenger  Window XJ "X" is February and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in February of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Rear  Window LJ "L" is March and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in March of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.

condition

Exterior

The Two Tone Silver (13) and Charcoal (07) exterior is in excellent driver condition. As one can see in the photos, the paint has a terrific gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. Often Corvettes will have particularly chipped up front ends, this car does not. There are no major scratches, scrapes, or other imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There may be some small blemishes that were to small to show up, but nothing that is really noticeable from five feet away. The original YJ8 aluminum wheels are in great shape with a brilliant finish and no curb rash. The Goodyear Eagle ST tires have great tread left and are sized 255/60/15. There are NO RUST ISSUES WITH THIS CAR as one can see in the many photos of the underside. The frame is totally solid with no rust around the "key hole" area in front of the rear tire and there are no signs of corrosion around the windshield, which are the 2 most notorious areas for rust on a Corvette of this era.

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALL of the glass on this Corvette, both side windows, the rear window, and even the windshield are all date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of May 5, 1978 (I05). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

The car looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The Mahogany Cloth interior of the Corvette is in splendid condition. The seats are in excellent condition with no rips, seam splits, or excessive wear. Please note that these appear to be the original seats, not some cheap aftermarket replacements or covers. The original carpet is in good condition with no notable stains, rips, or holes. This includes the rear carpet with is often neglected. The door panels are in superb shape with no cracks or rips and both door pulls are solid and in tact. Unlike many Corvettes of this age, the door panels actually fit well and tight to the door. The console is in good condition with no cracks, sun damage, or fading. The dash is in amazing condition with no sun damage, cracks, or fading. The original stereo is still in the car but is currently not working. This car has not been smoked in and there is no cigarette aroma whatsoever. The original pedal pads are not excessively worn and, as one can see from the pictures, show normal wear for car with this mileage. Corvette interiors are not known to wear well and the amazing condition of this original interior is a testament to the meticulous care this car has received throughout it's life.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Corvette is in great mechanical condition and it is ready to be enjoyed. The original numbers matching engine is in great running condition. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idles well. It drives terrifically and it is smooth on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, braking to stoplight, going through some curves, and shifting through all the gears. Please note that there are no strange noises or vibrations and the car performs quite well overall. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. This Corvette has plenty of power and is pretty fast. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. When started cold the car initially goes into high idle as it should and after a couple minutes properly goes into normal low idle. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed as one can see in the photos. The horn works as do all the exterior lights, all gauges (even the clock works), turn signals, wipers, and blower for the heater and a/c on all speeds. The a/c on this Corvette works and blows cold. One can observe the a/c compressor engaging properly and turning on in the video below. The entire vacuum system for the headlights works correctly with no effort or binding in the mechanism. Also, the headlights go up correctly with either the headlight switch or vacuum override switch. Their complete operation from both switches can be observed in the video below. As with many C3 Corvettes there is a little float feeling from the back end at certain speeds. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with T-tops out on a beautiful day.

The car runs and drives just as great as it looks.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1978 Corvette is in great condition and would make an excellent driver. Special and Anniversary Edition Corvettes always draw a premium over their standard Corvette counterparts. Matching numbers is very important in Corvette pricing and as one can see this car is very correct. The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased drastically over the past years. This is especially true with the Silver Anniversary Editions in our experience. These cars have been catching up to the '78 Pace Cars in value and many people, myself included, prefer the Anniversary Edition over the Pace Car. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is very apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The Silver Anniversary Edition Corvettes are secure and wise investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
