vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is proud to offer this completely numbers matching 1978 Corvette in marvelous condition with only 79,855 actual miles. This Corvette looks fantastic, runs great, and is an excellent driver. It is totally solid with great lines and absolutely no rust issues. The Corvette Light Beige (59) exterior over Dark Brown (69C) interior is one of the most attractive and striking color combinations available for 1978. It is also the original color scheme as indicated by the trim tag pictured below. Corvette Light Beige is the second most rare color available for 1978 with only 1,686 units produced. The low mileage is verified by not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, showing the mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos, video, list of numbers, and other information below to get a true sense of clean, correct, and original this Corvette really is.

This Corvette comes with dozens of receipts for maintenance and repair over the years that total over $10,000. Many of the receipts also have the mileage recorded on them. All of the recorded mileages are in correct order and are another great verification of the low original mileage. The previous owner also recorded a meticulous maintenance log, which is pictured below. In addition to the receipts and maintenance records the car also comes with some of the original documentation including the original owners manual, consumer information booklet, aluminum wheel instruction card, 1978 Chevrolet maintenance schedule, EPA fuel sheet, and the original battery booklet.

This Corvette is completely "Numbers Matching." The last six digits of the VIN are stamped on the engine pad, which is pictured below, indicating that this is the original engine that was installed in the car at the factory in St. Louis. The transmission is also original with the last six digits of the VIN stamped on the main case and pictured below. All of the paint and trim codes are also correct for this Corvette.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their car to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

model description

Chevrolet marked Corvette's 25th Anniversary in 1978 with the most extensive redesign of the car since the introduction of the C3 body style in 1968. The new Corvette introduced a large fastback style rear window that drastically increased luggage space in the rear compartment behind the seats. The interior of the 1978 was also significantly redesigned. The speedometer and tachometer were redesigned in a more square and vertical mode. A glove box was added on the passenger side to replace the pocket. The door panels were also completely new and included screw on arm rests to replace the molded style that been the standard since 1965. 1978 Corvettes featured special 25th Anniversary emblems specific to that year.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z87L8S430301 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM.  The "Z" is the series, Corvette.  The "37" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe.  The fifth digit is the engine, "L," correct for an L48 car.  The sixth digit, "8," indicates the model year, 1978.  The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis.  The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 30,301st Corvette made for 1978.
Body Build Date J12 "J" corresponds to June, and the "12" is the twelfth day of the month meaning this Corvette's body build date is June 12, 1978.
Engine Code V0531 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.  The "05" is the fifth month of year and the "31" is the thirty-first day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on May 31, 1978.  This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car.
Suffix Code CUT This means the motor was intended for an L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping 430301 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 430301, are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car.

Engine Block Casting Date E 22 8 "E" is May, "22" is the twenty-second day of the month, and the "8" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine block was cast on May 22, 1978.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Distributor 1103353 The distributor is original and correct with a 1103353 stamping.
Distributor Date Code 8D14 The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "D" denotes April, and the "14" is the fourteenth day of the month meaning the distributor was made on April 14, 1978.  This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 346249 The intake manifold is correct for a 1978 Corvette with an L48 engine.
Intake Manifold Casting Date E 30 8 "E" is May, "30" is the thirtieth day of the month, and "8" is the last digit of the calendar year so the intake manifold was cast on May 30, 1978.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.

Transmission Casting Number 8640300 The transmission has a 8640300 casting number, which is correct for a TH350 transmission in a 1978 Corvette.
Transmission Casting Date 5-78 1 The "5" is the fifth month of the year, the "78" is 1978, and the "1" is the first day of the month meaning the transmission case was cast on May 1, 1978.
Transmission Date Code B8E31N The "B" means the transmission as build in the Parma plant. The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year. The "E" is the fifth month of the year and the "31" is the thirty-first day of the month. The "N" is the shift in which the transmission was made. This would mean the transmission was made during the night shift in Parma on May 31, 1978.

condition

Exterior

The Corvette Light Beige exterior is in fantastic driver condition. As one can see in the photos, the paint has a dazzling gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. Both doors open and shut nicely. The YJ8 aluminum wheels are in excellent condition with a brilliant finish and no curb rash. The tires are correctly sized 225/70R15 and have plenty of tread left. The low front spoiler, which is a fragile and vulnerable part of the car, is in nice condition. Also, please note that the front and rear spoilers on this 1978 are the same style as the optional RPO D80 spoilers from a 1979 Corvette and the same as what came on the 1978 Corvette Pace Car. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There are some very small blemishes and very light checking that were too faint to be picked up by the camera, but nothing that is really noticeable from about five or ten feet away. There are NO RUST ISSUES with this car and as one can see in the many photos of the underside it is very clean underneath. The frame is totally solid with no rust around the "key hole" area in front of the rear tire and there are no signs of corrosion around the windshield or "birdcage" area, which are the two most notorious areas for rust on a Corvette of this era.

The car looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALL of the glass on this Corvette, even the windshield, is date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of June 12, 1978 (J12). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The Dark Brown interior of the Corvette is in absolutely fantastic condition. The seats are in excellent shape with no split seams or excessive wear. The carpet is also in great condition with no stains, rips, or holes. This includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The console and dash are in good condition with no fading, cracks, or sun damage. The original door panels are in nice shape overall. The door pulls are solid and intact. This car has not been smoked in and there no aroma of cigarettes whatsoever. The jack and jack handle are still present with the car and stowed correctly behind the passenger seat, pictured below showing the original stickers on the compartment lid. The original spare is also still with the car. Corvette interiors from this era are not known to wear well and the wonderful condition of this interior is a huge testament to the meticulous care this car has received throughout its life and another great verification of the low mileage.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Corvette is in great mechanical condition and it is ready to be enjoyed. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idles well. It drives terrifically and it is smooth on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, braking to stoplight, going through some curves, and shifting through all the gears. Please note that there are no vibrations and the car performs quite well overall. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. The transmission shifts smoothly throughout the power band. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean, detailed, and correct as one can see in the photos.

The horn work as do all the exterior lights, interior lights, turn signals, and wipers. The blower works on all speeds. The a/c works and blows cold. One can observe the a/c compressor clicking on and engaging properly in the video below. The entire vacuum system for the headlights works. Also, the headlights go up correctly with either the headlight switch on the dash or vacuum override switch. Their complete operation from both switches can be observed in the video. All of the gauges work with the obvious exception of the clock. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with T-tops out on a beautiful day.

The car runs and drives as well as it looks.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1978 Corvette is in great driver condition. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing, and as one car see this car is very correct. The originality, the rare and desirable color combination, and the great extent to which the numbers match make this car especially important and hard to duplicate. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased drastically over the past several years. They are secure and wise investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
