vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is very proud to offer this numbers matching 1978 Corvette Pace Car Edition in beautiful condition with only 23,675 original miles. This Corvette looks great, runs well, and is an awesome driver. It is loaded with highly desirable options such as the high performance L82 engine, glass roof panels, AM-FM Stereo with 8-Track (which actually works), and much more. This Pace Car is totally solid with no rust issues and straight lines. We purchased this Corvette from a gentleman in southern Ohio. He was a definite Corvette enthusiast with four Corvettes among the other classics in his collection. Along with this 1978 Pace Car we purchased a 1982 Collector Edition with 47,275 miles from the same owner, which we just sold on eBay for $17,500, so he had very good taste in cars. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Corvette that is ready to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable value. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come. The low original mileage is verified not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, showing the mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos, list of numbers, video, and information below to get a true sense of how nice and clean this Corvette really is.

This Pace Car comes with a ton of original documentation. Most important and impressive the original window sticker and a build sheet, which is extremely rare for a Corvette. Also, included with the car is the original owners manual, dealer copy of the option list showing the L82 Engine option and Pace Car Edition, warranty book showing the original owner, consumer information booklet, original new car inspection sheet, the original odometer statement from the original dealer showing the car with 9 miles, roof panel and blower operation notes, the original title application from June 2, 1978, the Goodyear Tire booklet, and even the original hazard light tag that would have hung from the steering column when the car was sitting the showroom brand new. Also, the previous owner included with the car what he said were the actual original tires, only replaced due to age, so they are available if the future owner wants them.

The car is completely numbers matching and there are photos below of the VIN stamp on the engine pad, engine build date, transmission VIN stamp, transmission casting date, and trim tag, which all decode and match correctly..

This Corvette is undeniably verified as an original authentic Pace Car Edition by the special VIN sequence, separate from normal Corvettes of the year. The difference is in the eighth digit of the VIN. Only Pace Cars have a "9" in that position while all other Corvettes have a "4." The car is also verified as a real Pace Car by the trim tag, pictured below, showing the correct 2-tone paint and interior codes, and the original dealer paperwork that is included.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their car to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

model description

1978 was a very special year for the third generation Corvette. It not only marked the 25th anniversary for the model, but also the first time that a Corvette made laps at the Indy 500 as an official pace car. 1978 saw the most extensive redesign of the car since the body style was introduced. The new design featured "fastback" rear end styling with a large rear window that drastically increased luggage space. The updates also included a newly designed interior with all new gauges, the addition of an actual glove box, and all new door panels.

To celebrate the Indy 500 Chevrolet built a series of pace car replicas. Chevrolet was extremely proud of the fact that as a pace car the Corvette was the first car to use a completely stock drive train, the first to be built from a one piece fiberglass body and the only pure two seater since before World War II. These pace car replicas had their own Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), separate from the standard Corvette, another first for Corvette. As well as having their own identification, the pace car replicas had their own paint scheme which consisted of a two tone paint with a red stripe and optional decals. The extremely high demand for the pace car continually increased the quantity produced and in the end Chevrolet decided to build one for every Corvette dealer, a total of 6,502.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z8748S904228 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM.  The "Z" is the series, Corvette.  The "87" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe.  The fifth digit is the engine, 4, correct for an L82 car.  The sixth digit, "8," indicates the model year, 1978.  The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis.  The eighth digit, "9," is exclusive to the Pace Car Edition. The last five digits are a sequence number for the Pace Car Editions so this is the 4,228th Corvette Pace Car Edition made for 1978.
Body Build Date H18 "H" corresponds to April, and the 18 is the eighteenth day of the month meaning this Corvette's body build date is April 18, 1978.
Engine Code V0408 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.  The "04" is the fourth month of year and the "08" is the eighth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on April 8, 1978.  This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car.
Suffix Code CMS This means the motor was intended for an L82 Corvette with an automatic transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping 904228 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 904228, are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car.
Engine Block Casting Number 3970010 The engine block has the correct 3970010 casting number.
Engine Block Casting Date B 9 8 "B" is February, "9" is the ninth day of the month, and "8" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine block was cast on February 9, 1978.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Distributor 1103291 The distributor is original and correct for an L82 with a 1103291 stamping.
Distributor Date Code 8B7 The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "C" denotes February, and "7" is the seventh day of the month meaning the distributor was made on February 7, 1978. This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Starter 1109065 The starter is original and correct for a later build 1978 Corvette with a 1109065 stamping.
Starter Date Code 8B23 The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "B" denotes February, and "23" is the twenty-third day of the month meaning the starter was made on February 23, 1978. This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Alternator 1102908 The starter is original and correct with a 1102908 stamping.
Alternator Date Code 8C17 The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "C" denotes March, and "17" is the seventeenth day of the month meaning the starter was made on March 18, 1978. This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Carburetor Main Body 17058228 The original carburetor has the correct stamping for a 1978 L82 Corvette with an automatic transmission and a/c. The fourth digit, "5," means the carb was built in the 1976 - 1979 production run. The fifth digit, "8," means it was built for the 1978 model year. The six digit, "2," indicates that it is a 4BBL carb. The seventh digit, "0," means is was built for the Chevrolet division of GM. The last digit, "8," means it was intended for use in an automatic transmission car such as this.
Carburetor Date Code 0808 The firth three digits, "080," indicate the 80th day of the year. The last digit, "8," is the year in which the carburetor was produced, 1978.  So this carburetor was stamped on March 21, 1978.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 458250 The intake manifold has a correct 458250 casting number.
Transmission Casting Number 8640300 The main case of the transmission has a 8640300 casting number. This is correct for a TH350, which is correct for a 1978 Corvette.
Transmission Casting Date 3-78 The "3" is March and "78" is 1978 so the main case of the transmission was cast in March of 1978.
Transmission VIN Stamping 904228 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 904228, are stamped on the main case of the transmission and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car.

condition

Exterior

The two-tone black and silver exterior is in nice driver condition. As one can see in the photos, the paint has a great gloss and deep shine. Both door open and shut easily. Often Corvettes will have particularly chipped up front ends, this car does not and even the original low front spoiler is in good shape. There are no major imperfections that have been excluded from the photos. With the age of the paint there are some small blemishes around the car. There are specific photos of some of the imperfections below, but others are too faint to show up in the photos. The factory Pace Car Edition aluminum wheels are in great shape with a nice finish and no curb rash. As one can see in the photos of the underside of the car, this Corvette has NO RUST ISSUES. The frame is totally solid with no rust in front of the rear tire and I have seen no evidence of corrosion around the windshield, which are the two most notorious spots for rust on a C3 Corvette. The tires are Corvette Goodyears and are not work out, but do show some age.

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALLL the windows on this Corvette, the side glass, rear window, and even the windshield are date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of April 18, 1978 (H18). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

The Corvette looks just as good in person as it does in the photos

Interior

The special Silver interior of the Corvette, which was an exclusive color for the Pace Car Edition, looks truly superb and appears to be totally original. The original seats look excellent with no rips, split seems, or signs of excessive wear. Please note that these are the original seats not some cheap aftermarket covers or replacements. The carpet is also in great condition with no stains, rips, or holes. This includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The carpet on the door panels is in good shape and not faded. All of the carpet in the car is also original. The door panels themselves are in good condition, fit well to the doors, and the door pulls are in tact. The dash and center console look good with no splits, sun fading, or cracks. The original radio works and even the 8-track player still works as one can see in the video below. The gauge faces are clean and crisp and the gauge lenses are crystal clear. The jack and jack handle are still present and stowed correctly behind the passenger seat, pictured below showing the original stickers on the compartment lid. The original spare with with the car and has never been used as it still has the nubs on it. The original T-Top storage bags are also included with the car and pictured below. This Pace Car has never been smoked in, there are no burns marks and no aroma of cigarettes at all. Corvette interiors are not known to wear well and the excellent condition of this amazingly original interior is a huge testament to the meticulous care this car has received throughout its life. Even very detailed items that are almost always broken or shabby are not on this car; details such as the finger pulls for the rear storage compartment and the fit of the center gauge cluster with the shifter console and down to the parking brake console.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Pace Car seems to be in very good mechanical condition. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idles well. The car drives terrifically; it is tight on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that there are no strange noises or vibrations and the car performs quite well. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. The brakes are responsive. The transmission shifts smoothly throughout the power band. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast, especially with the high performance L82 engine. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed as one can see in the photos. All of the upper and lower ignition shielding is still on the car as is the smog pump and catalytic converter. The horn works as do all the exterior lights, wipers, power windows, all gauges with the obvious exception of the clock, the blower on all speeds, the power antenna, hood lamp, and even the cruise control works. Please note very detailed items that most buyers do not even know to look for are functional on this Corvette such as the interior delay light timer and the small light by the spare tire still work. The power locks work on the driver’s door, but the passenger door needs a hand to operate, both locks work correctly with the key from the outside and manually inside. The a/c on the car does not work. The vacuum system for the headlights works correctly with no binding. Also, the headlights go up correctly with either the headlight switch or vacuum override switch. Their complete operation from both switches can be observed in the video below. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with extra power from the L82 and the T-tops out on a beautiful day.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1978 Pace Car Corvette is in great driver condition. Numbers matching and is extremely important in Corvette pricing and as one can see this car is very original and correct. The collector and anniversary edition Corvettes have always been even more collectible and desirable than their normal counterparts, which has definitely proven true for the 1978 Pace Car Edition. The Pace Car Edition is probably the most collectible Corvette out of the entire third generation, and by far the most priced and valued of the rubber bumper Corvettes.

The nice condition, the very low original miles, the desirable model, and the great extent to which the numbers match make this car especially important and difficult to duplicate at our asking price. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is very apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased drastically over the past years, especially for premium examples like this car. They are secure and wise investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
