about the dealership
Seven Hills Motorcars is Cincinnati's premier Corvette specialist and a licensed and registered auto dealer by the State of Ohio.  With many years of focused experience I specialize in 1963 to 1982 Corvettes.  There is no other dealership that can better meet your needs if you would like to buy, sell, or just find out more information about your Corvette.  This is simply a one man operation, and this is not my full time employment.  I do it because I enjoy it.  I am a collector and enthusiast and therefore look for cars that excite me.  I do not purchase at dealer auctions; each car is hand picked by me because it is special or rare to me and because I like it.

vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is very proud to offer this beautiful numbers matching 1978 Corvette in excellent condition with only 40,570 original miles.  The car looks great, drives awesome, and is ready to be enjoyed.  It is very well sorted, priced to sell, and comes with service records from the previous owner.  The low mileage is verified by not only the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, stating the mileage as "actual."  Please peruse all of the photos and the list of numbers below to get a true sense of clean and nice this Corvette really is.

Chevrolet marked Corvette's 25th Anniversary in 1978 with the most extensive redesign of the car since the introduction of the C3 body style in 1968.  The new Corvette introduced a large fastback style rear window that drastically increased luggage space in the rear compartment behind the seats.  The interior of the 1978 was also significantly redesigned.  The speedometer and tachometer were redesigned in a more square and vertical mode.  A glove box was added on the passenger side to replace the pocket.  The door panels were also completely new and included screw on arm rests to replace the molded style that been the standard since 1965.  1978 Corvettes featured special 25th Anniversary emblems specific to that year.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct.  This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order.  For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled.  All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z87L8S420019 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM.  The "Z" is the series, Corvette.  The "87" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe.  The fifth digit is the engine, L, correct for an L48 car.  The sixth digit, "8," indicates the model year, 1978.  The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis.  The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 20,019th Corvette made in 1978, which also places the car's build date in February 1978.
Engine Code V0202 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.  The first "02" is the second month of year and the second "02" is the second day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on February 2, 1978.
Suffix Code CUT This means the motor was intended for an L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping 420019 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 420019, are stamped on the engine pad meaning this engine is original to this car.
Engine Block Casting Number 3970010 The engine block has the correct 3970010 casting number.
Engine Block Casting Date A 31 8 "A" is January, "31" is the thirty-first day of the month, and "8" is 1978 so the engine block was cast on January 31, 1978.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 346249 The intake manifold is correct with a 346249 casting number.
Intake Manifold Casting Date A 30 8 "A" is January, "30" is the thirtieth day of the month, and "8" is 1978 so the engine block was cast on January 30, 1978.
Distributor 1103353 The distributor is correct for an L48 automatic with 1103353 stamped on the housing.
Distributor Date Code 8 A 23 The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "A" denotes January, and "23" is the twenty-third day of the month meaning the distributor was made on January 23, 1978.
Carburetor Main Body

Please note that this car has a very rare Rochester Quadrajet made by Carter.

17058204

The original carburetor has the correct stamping for an automatic L48 Corvette.  The fourth digit, "5," means the carb was built in the 1976 - 1979 production run.  The fifth digit,  "8," means it was built for the 1978 model year.  The six digit, "2," indicates that it is a 4BBL carb.  The seventh digit,  "0," means is was built for the Chevrolet division of GM.  The last digit, "4," means it was intended for use in an automatic car such as this.
Carburetor Date Code 308 The date code format for Carter build Quadrajets is a bit different, but I believe that the first two digits, "30" indicate the 30th day of the year.  The last digit, "8" is the year it was produced, 1978.  So the carb  was stamped on January 30, 1978.
Alternator 1102908 The alternator is correct with 1102908 stamped on the housing.
Alternator Date Code 8 A 18 The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "A" denotes January, and "18" is the eighteenth day of the month meaning the alternator was made on January 18, 1978.
Transmission Casting Number 8640820 The transmission has the correct casting number for a TH350.
Transmission Casting Date 1-78 The main case of the transmission was cast in January of 1978.
Windshield NJ "N" is January and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in January of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Driver Window NJ "N" is January and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in January of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Passenger  Window CG "C" is November and "G" is 1977 so this window is original, made in November of 1977.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Rear  Window YG "Y" is October and "G" is 1977 so this window is original, made in October of 1977.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.

condition

Exterior

The silver exterior is in very good driver condition.  As one can see in the photos the finish has nice gloss and deep shine.  Often many corvettes will have particularly chipped up front ends, this car does not.  There are no major scratches, scrapes, or other imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos.  There are small blemishes around the car that were too small to show up in photos, but nothing that is really noticeable from about five or ten feet away.  The correct Corvette YJ8 aluminum wheels are in great condition with a nice finish.  The tires are look new with about 90% tread left. This Corvette has absolutely NO rust issues.  The frame is totally solid with no rust in front of the rear tire and I have seen no evidence of corrosion around the windshield

Window Date Codes

Please note that all of glass on this car is date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of February, 1978. Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The Oyster interior of the Corvette is in fantastic condition.  The seats are in splendid condition and look in person just as they do in the photos with no rips, holes, or splits seams.  They are not worn through in the typical areas such as where the driver gets in and out.  Please note that these appear the original seats, not some cheap aftermarket covers or replacements.  The carpet is in excellent condition with no tears, holes, or stains.  This included the rear carpet which is often neglected.  The dash is in excellent condition with no cracks or sun fading.  The original radio is still installed in the car and actually gets decent reception.  The door panels look great with no cracks or splits and they also fit tightly to the door, which is a common problem on this era Corvette.  This car has not been smoked in and there is no aroma of cigarettes whatsoever.  Corvette interiors are not known to wear well and the good condition of this interior is a testament to the excellent care this car has received throughout its life

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in fine mechanical condition and it is a great driver.  There is no smoke when starting or driving the car.  The transmission shifts smoothly.  The car drives terrifically; it is very tight on the road and at highway speeds.  The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other.  Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed as one can see in the photos.  All of the gauges work with the obvious exception of the clock.  All of the interior and exterior lights work and the headlights pop up with no binding.  The pull down vacuum switch for the headlights works as well.  The blower works on all speeds.  The only item that I am aware of that does not work on the car is the a/c.  This Corvette has plenty of power and is very fast with the high performance L82.  The catalytic converter was just replaced along with the exhaust from the cat back with correct pipes and mufflers from Corvette Central.  Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the t-tops out on a nice day.

Overall
Condition

Overall, this 1979 L82 Corvette is in terrific condition.  Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing.  The originality and low original mileage make this car especially desirable.  This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road.  Unfortunately, when this car was recently painted that shop that did the work removed the trim tag to paint the door jams and was unable to locate it when they were finished so the car does not have a trim tag.  The previous owner stated that he did believe this to be a true B2Z Silver Anniversary Editon.  The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased drastically over the past several years.  They are secure and wise investments for a collector.  One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
