vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is very glad to offer this numbers matching 1979 Corvette in with only 52,325 original miles. This Corvette is very original, runs well, and is a nice driver. It is totally solid with no rust issues and straight lines. The body appears to be in good condition, but the paint is showing its age in certain areas. There are receipts totaling over $3,500 pictured below for service performed on the car including a complete engine rebuild in 2010. The Black over Black Leather color combination is one of the most desirable and looks awesome on the C3 Corvette. It is also the correct and original color scheme as verified by the codes on the trim tag, which is pictured below. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Corvette at an unbeatable value. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come. The low original mileage is verified not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, showing the mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos, list of numbers, video, and information below to get a true sense of how nice and clean this Corvette really is.

This Corvette is extra interesting and rare in the fact that it is Corvette serial number 000041, which means it is only the 41st Corvette made for 1979. Only 770 1979 Corvettes were made in August of 1978 and this very early example was made on August 25, 1978, with an "A25" body build date, "A" is the first month of production.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their car to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

model description

The Corvette evolution continues" announced the slogan from the 1979 Corvette sales catalog. The L48 engine received the dual-snorkel air intake introduced in 1978 for the optional L82 V-8, which added 10 horsepower. All Corvettes in 1979 now had the high-back bucket seats introduced on the 1978 limited-edition Indianapolis 500 Pace Car. A higher pivot point allowed the seat backrest fold more flat and level with the luggage area floor. which drastically improved access to the rear storage area.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z8789S400041 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM.  The "Z" is the series, Corvette.  The "87" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe.  The fifth digit is the engine, 8, correct for an L48 car.  The sixth digit, "9," indicates the model year, 1979.  The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis.  The last five digits are a sequence number so this is only the 41st Corvette made for 1979.
Body Build Date A25 "A" corresponds to August, and "25" is the twenty-fifth day of the month meaning this Corvette's body build date is August 25, 1978.
Engine Code V0811 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.  The "08" is the eighth month of year and the "11" is the eleventh day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on August 11, 1978.  This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car.
Suffix Code ZAB This means the motor was intended for an early build L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping 400041 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 400041, are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car.
Engine Block Casting Number 3970010 The engine block has the correct 3970010 casting number.
Engine Block Casting Date H 10 8 "H" is August, "10" is the tenth day of the month, and "8" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine block was cast on August 10, 1978.
Distributor 1103353 The distributor is original and correct for an L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission with a 1103353 stamping.
Distributor Date Code 8 F 29 The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "F" denotes June, and "29" is the twenty-ninth day of the month meaning the distributor was made on June 29, 1978. This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Transmission Casting Date 7-78 Cast into the main case of the transmission is "7-78," which is July 1978. This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the transmission.
Transmission Date Code B 9 M 17 D The "B" means the transmission as build in the Parma plant. The "9" is the year, 1979. The "M" is the eighth month of the year and the "17" is the seventeenth day of the month. The "D" is the shift in which the transmission was made. This would mean the transmission was made during the day shift in Parma on August 17, 1978.
Transmission VIN Stamping 400041 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 400041, are stamped on the main case of the transmission and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car.
Windshield LJ "L" is March and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in March of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Rear Window IJ "I" is June and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in June of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Driver's Window IJ "I" is June and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in June of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Passenger  Window IJ "I" is June and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in June of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.

condition

Exterior

The Black exterior is in decent driver condition and looks in person just as it does in the photos. Both doors open and shut easily and operate well. The factory N90 Aluminum Wheels are in good condition with a nice finish and no curb rash. We have been very objective and comprehensive with the dozens of photos of the outside of the car. We have not tried to exclude any imperfections, most sellers and certainly most dealers would not be so upfront and comprehensive with trying to show the flaws. Around the car there is some checking, cracking, and other imperfections. The rear pin on the left T-Top does the not work. The tires have plenty of tread left, but do have some cracking in the rubber. They are correctly sized 225/70R15. This Corvette has absolutely no rust issues. We have included many photos of the underside of the car. The frame looks solid, there is no visible rust around the "key hole," and we have seen no evidence of corrosion around the windshield, which are the most notorious areas for rust on C3 corvettes.

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALL of the glass on this Corvette, both side windows, the rear window, and even the windshield are all date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of August 25, 1978 (A25). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The Black leather interior in this Corvette is in nice original condition. The seats look in person just as they do in the photos with some small signs of use in the typical area where the driver gets in and out. There is a specific photo of the area below to show how unnoticeable this is. Please note that these are the original seats and leather skins, not some cheap aftermarket covers or replacements. The carpet is in excellent original condition with no major stains. This includes the rear carpet with is often neglected. There is one small spot of wear on the driver's side carpet, which is visible in the photos. The console and dash are in great condition with no cracks or sun damage. The door panels are in amazing shape with no splits or tears. The door pulls are solid and intact. The radio works intermittantly and most importantly the dash is original and uncut. The gauge faces are clean and crisp. The jack and jack handle are still present and stowed correctly behind the passenger seat, pictured below showing the original stickers on the compartment lid. The original spare is still with the car and still has the nubs on it. The original T-Top storage bags are also included with the car. This Corvette has never been smoked in, there are no burns marks and no aroma of cigarettes at all. Corvette interiors are not known to wear well and the good condition of this amazingly original interior is a huge testament to the care this car has received throughout its life.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in good mechanical condition. The car starts right away every time and runs well. It drives terrifically and it is tight on the road and at highway speeds. As stated above the engine was rebuilt in 2010 with receipts below for over $3,500. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that there are no strange noises or vibrations and the car performs quite well. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. The brakes are responsive and do not pull. The transmission shifts smoothly throughout the power band. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed as one can see in the photos. The horn works as do all the exterior lights, wipers, and power windows. All gauges with the obvious exception of the clock and the temperature gauge. We have tested the temperature of the engine with a Infrared heat gun after a long drive in the car and it was running at 180 degrees so it does not overheat. The blower motor works on all speeds except high. The a/c system does not blow cold, but is totally complete and there is a belt on the compressor so the system most likely needs to be recharged. The power locks work to unlock the doors, but not to lock; both locks work correctly with the key from the outside and manually inside. The vacuum system for the headlights works great with no effort or binding in the mechanism. The headlights and headlight door operation from can be observed in the video below. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the T-tops out on a beautiful day.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1979 Corvette is in great driver condition. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing, especially with low mileage examples like this car. The originality, the awesome color combination, and the great extent to which the numbers match make this car especially important and hard to duplicate. While this is not an NCRS or Bloomington Gold show car, it is a verifiably reliable and solid driver quality Corvette that is ready to be enjoyed. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased drastically over the past several years. They are secure and wise investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
