vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is very proud to offer this completely numbers matching 1979 Corvette time capsule in beautifully original condition and only 63,215 original miles. It is loaded with highly desirable options such as factory spoilers, N90 aluminum wheels, power windows, air conditioning, sport mirrors, and the color scheme. The Black over Red Leather is one of the most attractive and desirable color combinations available for 1979. It is also the original color scheme as indicated by the trim tag pictured below. Also pictured below is the engine pad showing the last six digits of the VIN indicating that this is the original. engine that was installed in the car at the factory in St. Louis in 1978. This is definitely one of the most original low mileage 1979 Corvettes on the market right now. The low mileage is verified by not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, showing the mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos, video, list of numbers, and other information below to get a true sense of clean, correct, and original this Corvette really is.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their car to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

model description

The Corvette evolution continues" announced the slogan from the 1979 Corvette sales catalog. The L48 engine received the dual-snorkel air intake introduced in 1978 for the optional L82 V-8, which added 10 horsepower. All Corvettes in 1979 now had the high-back bucket seats introduced on the 1978 limited-edition Indianapolis 500 Pace Car. A higher pivot point allowed the seat backrest fold more flat and level with the luggage area floor. which drastically improved access to the rear storage area.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z8789S409234 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM.  The "Z" is the series, Corvette.  The "87" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe.  The fifth digit is the engine, "8," correct for an L48 car.  The sixth digit, "9," indicates the model year, 1979.  The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis.  The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 9,234th Corvette made for 1979.
Body Build Date C31 "C" corresponds to October, and the 31 is the 31st day of the month meaning this Corvette body build date is Halloween, 1978.
Engine Code V1024 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.  The "10" is the tenth month of year and the "24" is the twenty-fourth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on October 24, 1978.  This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car.
Suffix Code ZAB This means the motor was intended for an early production L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping 409234 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 409234, are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car.
Engine Block Casting Number 3970010 The engine block has the correct 3970010 casting number.
Engine Block Casting Date J 15 8 "J" is October, "15" is the fifteenth day of the month, and "8" is 1978 so the engine block was cast on October 15, 1978.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Distributor 1103353 The distributor is original and correct with a 1103353 stamping with a ZAB suffix code.
Distributor Date Code 8G5 The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "G" denotes July, and "5" is the fifth day of the month meaning the distributor was made on July 5, 1978.  This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 14007376 The intake manifold is correct with a 14007376 casting number.
Intake Manifold Casting Date J 21 8 "L" is December, "14" is the fourteenth day of the month, and "8" is 1978 so the intake manifold was cast on December 14, 1978.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Carburetor Main Body 17059216 The original carburetor has the correct stamping for a 350ci L48 Corvette . The fourth digit, "5," means the carb was built in the 1976 - 1979 production run. The fifth digit, "9," means it was built for the 1979 model year. The six digit, "2," indicates that it is a 4BBL carb. The seventh digit, "1," means is was built for the Chevrolet division of GM. The last digit, "6," means it was intended for use in an automatic car such as this.
Carburetor Date Code 2998 The firth three digits, "299," indicate the 299th day of the year. The last digit, "8," is the year in which the carburetor was produced, 1978. So this carburetor was stamped on October 26, 1978.
Starter 1998217 The starter is correct with 1998217 stamped on the housing.
Windshield YJ The "Y" is October and the "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in October of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Driver's Window AJ The "A" is September and the "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in September of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Passenger  Window AJ The "C" is September and the "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in September of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Rear Window UJ The "U" is July and the "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in July of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.

condition

Exterior

The black exterior is in decent driver condition. The doors open and shut very nicely and with little effort. The urethane bumpers and more impressively the factory spoilers fit very well to the fiberglass body. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. No one can tell for sure what has happened with any vehicle over 35 years, but we believe that this Corvette has original paint. We have found no evidence of body work and the bonding strips in the fenders are visible and have not been disturbed. We have seen no paint lines, tape lines, overspray, paint on the trim tag, or other evidence of paintwork. The paintjob has some age and blemishes, which is evident in the photos. I have done my best to accurately and objectively photograph the car and show the flaws, but some are too small or cannot be picked up by the camera. One should really view the car in person to get the best and most accurate idea of what the car really looks like. For the most part however, the car looks in person as it does in the photos. This Corvette has absolutely no rust issues. The frame is totally solid with no rust in front of the rear tire and I have seen no evidence of corrosion around the windshield. The wheels are in good condition with a nice finish. The tires look virtually brand new and show no wear at all.

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALL of the windows on this Corvette are date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of October 31, 1978 (C31). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The Red leather interior of the Corvette is in awesome original condition. The seats look great with no excessive wear. There are just some small signs of wear in the typical area where the driver gets in and out. There is a specific photos of the are below to show how unnoticeable this is. The carpet is in excellent original condition with no major stains or holes. This includes the rear carpet with is often neglected. The console and dash are in great condition with no cracks or sun damage. The door panels are in amazing shape with no splits or tears and, unlike many Corvettes of this age, they fit well and tight to the door. The door pulls are solid and intact. This car has no aroma of cigarettes whatsoever. The red speaker box in the back of the car that houses the CD changer is very tasteful, well done, and not obtrusive. Corvette interiors are not known to wear well and the excellent condition of this original interior is a huge testament to the meticulous care this car has received throughout its life. Even very detailed items that most buyers are not even aware of, such as the interior delay light timer and courtesy light by the spare tire, are functional on this Corvette.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in very good mechanical condition. The way this car runs and drives are some of its strongest points. It is an exceptional driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast. It starts right away every time, idles well, and runs great. The transmission shifts well throughout the power band. The brakes do not pull to one side of the other. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed as one can see in the photos. The horn works as do all the interior and exterior lights, all gauges (with the obvious exception of the clock), wipers, blower for the heater and a/c, and power windows. The a/c will blow cool air, but the compressor does make some noise when revving the engine. The cruise control does not work , which is a very common problem on C3's. The entire vacuum system for the headlights works correctly from both the switch on the dash and the override switch; their operation from both switches can be observed in the video. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the T-tops out on a beautiful day.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1979 L82 Corvette is in terrific condition. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing, especially with a low mileage car like this. The originality, the rare and desirable color combination, the appealing options, and the great extent to which the numbers match make this car especially important and hard to duplicate. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased drastically over the past several years. They are secure and wise investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
