vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is glad to offer this 1979 Corvette that is priced to sell. This Corvette runs well and drives okay, but does need some work all around. It is numbers matching with the last six digits of the VIN stamped on the engine pad, which is pictured below. It loaded with factory options such as the N90 aluminum wheels, D80 front and rear spoilers, and glass T-tops. The car does need some TLC overall, but is it a very worthy project with some fundamentally strong points like the numbers matching engine. This Corvette has a ton of potential and would make a great project. One could buy this car now and sell it for more than the asking price with minimal work and effort. Please peruse the list of numbers, all of the photos, and video below to get a true sense of this Corvette.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their car to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

numbers

Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly.

item number description*
VIN 1Z8789S419421 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM.  The "Z" is the series, Corvette.  The "87" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe.  The fifth digit is the engine, "8," correct for an L48 car.  The sixth digit, "9," indicates the model year, 1979.  The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis.  The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 19,421st Corvette made for 1979.
Body Build Date F18 "F" corresponds to January, and the 18 is the 18th day of the month meaning this Corvette body build date is January 18, 1979.
Engine Code V0108 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.  The "01" is the first month of year and the "08" is the eighth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on January 8, 1979.  This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car.
Suffix Code ZAH This means the motor was intended for an L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping 419421 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 419421, are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below meaning this engine is original to this car.
Engine Block Casting Number 3970010 The engine block has the correct 3970010 casting number.
Engine Block Casting Date L 22 8 "L" is December, "22" is the twenty-second day of the month, and "8" is 1978 so the engine block was cast on December 22, 1978.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Distributor 1103302 The distributor is original and correct with a 1103302 stamping. Please not that this distributor was only used on engines with the "ZAH" suffix code.
Distributor Date Code 8M15 The "8" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "M" denotes December, and "15" is the fifteenth day of the month meaning the distributor was made on December 15, 1978.  This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Intake Manifold Casting Number 14007376 The intake manifold is correct with a 14007376 casting number.
Intake Manifold Casting Date L 14 8 "L" is December, "14" is the fourteenth day of the month, and "8" is 1978 so the intake manifold was cast on December 14, 1978.  Which is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
Windshield VJ The "V" is December and the "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in December of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Driver's Window VJ The "V" is December and the "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in December of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Passenger  Window CJ The "C" is November and the "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in November of 1978.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.
Rear Window NA The "N" is January and the "A" is 1979 so this window is original, made in January of 1979.  This is correct as it predates the build date of the car.

condition

Exterior

The yellow exterior paint is in presentable driver condition. The paint has a smooth finish and a high gloss overall. I would encourage close inspection of all the photos and video as the paint does have flaws. The wheels look good with no curb rash and a nice finish. There are no major spots or blemishes in the paint that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. I have done my best to accurately and objectively photograph the car and show all of the flaws, but some are too small or cannot be picked up by the camera. One should really view the car in person to get the best and most accurate idea of what the car really looks like. For the most part however, the car looks in person as it does in the photos. At some point the in the past this car was painted red, which is evident under close inspection. The tires have about 80% tread left. There are no rust issues with this car. As one can see in the photos the frame is solid with no rust in front of the rear tire around the "key hole." The tires are in good shape with about 75% tread left..

Window Date Codes

Please note that ALL of the windows on this Corvette are date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of January 18, 1979 (F18). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The black leather interior in this Corvette is in good condition. The seats look in person as they do in the photos. They are not worn through in the typical area where the driver gets in and out, but do have some rips and split seams. Please note that these appear to be the original seats, not some cheap aftermarket replacements or covers. The carpet is in in good condition with no major stains or rips. This includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The dash does have some cracks and a bad spot on the driver's side corner. The door panels are in decent condition and both door pulls are solid and in tact. This car has no aroma of cigarette smoke at all.

Mechanical

This Corvette seems to be in decent mechanical condition. It starts right away every time, idles well, and seems to runs okay. There is no smoke when starting or driving the car. The transmission shifts well into all gears. The brakes need service as the pedal is spongy. The car will stop and the brakes do work, but for the sake of safety they should be repaired. The previous owner put a new caliper on the car so the system may just need to be bled, we are not sure. We have driven the car around our neighborhood and it performed okay on the road, but that is it; we have not had the car on the expressway or up to high speeds. The engine is pretty clean and nicely detailed as one can see from the photos. All of the gauges work except the tachometer and the obvious exception of the clock. The turn signals work as one can see in the video. The headlights go up and down with no binding as one can see in the video. With all of that said there is still work to be done to the car overall and there are surely some bugs to be worked out before this car can be considered a reliable driver. There are some items on the car that do not work such as the power locks, which is a very common problem on C3's, cruise control, wipers, power antenna, blower, radio, a/c, tail lights, and horn. The driver's side power window works, but the passenger side does not. There are some some fluid leaks on the car, specifically the power steering. There may be other troubles with the car that I have possibly overlooked so I would suggest any perspective buyer inspect the car in person if possible. Most sellers would not be so upfront and definitely not as through with these issues, but in our attempt to be completely honest we must disclose them.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1979 Corvette has a ton of potential and it a very worthy project that someone could drive and enjoy as they improve the car. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell with all of its good and bad points in mind. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing and as one can see this car is correct. It turns heads and gets a ton of attention wherever it goes. The value of these later C3 Corvettes has gone up dramatically in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
