This Corvette is loaded with great options such as power
seat, power locks, N90 aluminum wheels, and
the glass T-Tops. The car is also completely numbers matching with the
last six digits of the VIN stamped on the engine block and
the main case of the transmission indicating the engine and
transmission are the original units installed in the car new
at the factory. The paint and trim codes
are also correct for the car. Even items like the
carburetor, intake, distributor, alternator, and even the starter are all
correct and original with the right part numbers and
As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle.
We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our
Corvettes come from owners who expect their car to go to someone
that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.
We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the
car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each
picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so
you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a
question about the Corvette, just give us a call.
Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the
correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but
all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This
means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the
correct order. For example, all of the dates for the
individual engine components and the engine casting date should
obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the
parts had to be produced before they could be assembled.
Most of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated
The first digit, "1," indicates that the US is the country
of origin. The "G" is the manufacturer, GM. The third digit,
"1," is the make, Chevrolet. The fourth digit, "A," is the
restraint system, manual belts. The fifth digit, "Y," is the
series, Corvette. The "87," is the body style, 2-door sport
coupe. The eighth digit "6" is the engine, L81. The ninth
digit is a check that car vary from car to car. The tenth
digit, "B" is the model year, 1981. The "S" is the plant
where the car was produced, St. Louis. The last five digits
are a sequence number so this is the 5,384th Corvette made
for 1981 in St. Louis, MO.
Body Build Date
"C" corresponds to
October, and the "09" is the ninth day of the month meaning this Corvette's body build
date is October 9, 1981.
"V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant.
The "09" is the ninth month of year and the
"30" is the
thirtieth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on
September 30, 1980. This is correct as it precedes the build
date of the car.
This means the motor was intended for an L81 Corvette with
an automatic transmission, which is correct for this car.
Engine VIN Stamping
The last 6 digits of the car's VIN,
405384, are stamped on
the engine pad meaning this engine is original to this car.
Engine Block Casting Number
The engine block has the correct 14010207 casting number,
which is correct for a 1981 Corvette.
Engine Block Casting Date
I 16 0
September, "16" is the sixteenth day of the month, and the
"0" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine
block was cast on September 16, 1980, which is correct as it
predates the assembly date.
Intake Manifold Casting Number
The intake manifold has the correct 14007376 casting number.
The distributor is original and correct for a 1981 Corvette with
a 1103443 stamping.
Distributor Date Code
The "0" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "J"
denotes September, and "5" is the fifth day of the month
meaning the distributor was made on September 5, 1980. This
is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine.
This is correct part number for an automatic 1981 Corvette
with an automatic transmission.
The "170" means the carb was produced after 1976. The fourth
digit, "8," means the carb was built in the 1980's. The
fifth digit, "1," means it was built for the 1981 model
year. The six digit, "2," indicates that it is a 4BBL carb.
The seventh digit, "1," means is was built for the Chevrolet
division of GM. The last digit, "8," means it was intended
for use in an automatic transmission car such as this.
Carburetor Date Code
The firth three digits, "078," indicate the 78th day of the
year. The last digit, "1," is the year in which the
carburetor was produced, 1981. So this carburetor was
stamped on March 19, 1981. This date is past the build date
of the car, but the carb number is correct so this may have
been replaced under warranty when the car was new.
Transmission Casting Number
The main case of the transmission has the correct 8641319
casting number for a 1981 Corvette with a TH350
Transmission Casting Date
The "11" would be the eleventh day of the month. The "8"
would be the eighth month of the year and the "80" would be
1980 so the main case of the transmission was cast on August
Transmission VIN Stamp
The last 6 digits of the car's VIN,
405384, are stamped on
the main case of the transmission and pictured below meaning
this transmission is original to this car.
information obtained from Alan A. Colvin's Corvette by the Numbers
and Mike Antonick's Corvette Black Book.
The White exterior is in
excellent driver condition. As one can see in the photos the
finish has a terrific gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. The N90
aluminum wheels and center caps are in beautiful condition with
a brilliant finish and no major curb rash. The tires have about
90% tread left
and are correctly sized 255/60R15. Also, the tires have a Chevy
Bowtie logo in the white letters, which is neat little detail.
There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally
excluded from the photos. There are some very tiny blemishes that were too
small to show up in
the pictures, but nothing that is really noticeably from about
five or ten feet away. As one can see in the photos of the underside, this
Corvette is clean underneath. The frame is looks good
around the "key hole" area in front of the rear tire and we have
seen no evidence of corrosion on the "A" pillars, which are the
most common areas for rust on a C3 Corvette. We have included
many photos of the underside to show how nice it looks.
The car looks just as good in person as it does
in the photos.
Red Leather interior in this Corvette is in spectacular condition. The seats
look virtually brand new with no
rips or split seams. They are not worn in the typical area
on the bolster where the driver gets in and out. The carpet is good condition with no
holes or tears. This
includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The
gauge faces are clean and crisp and the gauge lenses are
crystal clear. The door panels are in
great shape overall and the door pulls are solid and intact. The dash
and console look awesome with no cracks or sun fading. A
jack and jack handle are with the car, stored
correctly behind the passenger seat. The original spare is
still with the car and has never been used. Corvette interiors from this era are not known to
wear well, and the excellent condition of this interior is a huge testament to the
meticulous care and attention
this car has received throughout its life.
The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the
This Corvette seems to be in very good mechanical condition. The car
starts right away every time, runs well, and idles well. It drives great and feels nice on
the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can
observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph,
shifting through all the gears, braking to stoplight, and going
through some curves. Please note that there are no vibrations or
and the car performs quite well overall. There is no blue smoke
when starting or driving the car. The brakes are responsive and
do not pull to one side or the other. The brakes were recently
serviced by the previous owner. This Corvette has plenty of
power and is quite fast. Also, the engine compartment is
beautifully clean and detailed as one can see in the photos.
Even the smog pump and catalytic converter are still
horn works as do all the exterior lights, interior
lights, wipers, power windows, and
power seat in all 6 directions. All of the gauges work. The vacuum system for the
headlights works correctly. Also, the headlights go up
properly with either the headlight switch or vacuum
override switch. There complete operation form both
switches can be viewed in the video below. The a/c works
and blows cold, one can observe the a/c compressor
clicking on and engaging properly in the video. The
blower works on all speeds but high. The power locks
and the check engine light do not work. Not enough can be said as to how
much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the T-tops out on a beautiful day.
The car runs and
drives as well as it looks.
Overall, this 1981 Corvette is in
magnificent driver condition. Numbers matching is extremely
important in Corvette pricing and as any buyer can see
this Corvette is extremely correct. The originality, the
beautiful color combination, the excellent overall condition, and the great extent to which the
numbers match make this car especially important and
hard to duplicate. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention
driving down the road. It is apparent that the vehicle
has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The
prices of C3 Corvettes have increased considerably over
the past several years. They are secure and wise
investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this
vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the
purchase price with minimal effort.
