Seven Hills Motorcars is very proud to offer this unmolested, numbers matching, PHS documented, 1977 Special Edition Trans Am, which is in amazing survivor condition inside and out and priced to sell. This Trans Am is one of only 3760 SE's made in 1977 with a factory ordered W72 high performance Pontiac engine backed by an 3 speed automatic transmission. This Special Edition is the epitome of cool and is infamous from its staring role in the Smokey and the Bandit movie. Everywhere you go in this car you will get fond looks and thumbs up, its a true piece of authentic American History. This Trans Am has been very well preserved its entire existence and is in very original condition to this day. To find a true special edition TA, which is fully loaded with $2,767.00 (half the price of the base Trans Am) in factory ordered options, in this level of survivor condition is a true testament to the car's previous owners. This Trans Am is loaded with factory ordered options such as: power windows, power door locks, deluxe black vinyl interior, AC, tilt wheel, rear defrost, am/fm stereo with 8 track player, cruise control, T-tops, remote deck lid release, additional acoustical insulation, lamp group, heavy duty radiator, most important the Y82 special edition package, and a factory ordered W72 high performance engine which still remains in the engine bay of this fantastic Trans Am. This Trans Am looks good, runs awesome, and is fun to drive. The marked on these 1977 Special Edition Trans Am's is red hot right now. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come. This Trans Am is finished in the beautiful and desirable color combinations of Black paint with Gold SE stripping over Black deluxe interior. This is the factory color scheme as verified on the trim tag pictured below as well as the PHS documentation. Please peruse all of the photos, video, and information below to get a true sense of correct and nice this Trans Am really is.

Please note that this Trans Am is "numbers matching" meaning the engine is original to the car. The last six digits of the VIN, 161744, are stamped on the engine block and pictured below, indicating that this is the engine that was installed in the car brand new at the factory. Also stamped on the engine block and pictured below is the engine code "YG," which is the correct code for a 1977 W72 400ci Pontiac.

As a side note, this Trans Am is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our classics come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Pontiac, just give us a call.

Y82 :1976-1978

Let me start saying that 1976 was the first year for Special Editions, in 1976 Pontiac would celebrate their 50th anniversary, and by the way they built very few of them, therefore considered rare. 1977 was the year the movie Smokey and the Bandit was released and they used a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am Special Edition in that film, making the 1977 TA an instant hit . We don't know for sure why, but Pontiac did not stamped the code Y82 on the cowl tags, at least I have not seen any in 76-77 models, so here is some tips to help you figure if your car is SE or not. All Y82 Trans Ams had black exterior (cowl tag must show 19L 19U), they all had Gold Birds decals, German style lettering , Gold pin stripping all around and Gold front grilles. The interior was not necessarily black, we have seen and restored SE's with red interior, white , Tan. As per interior, all the SE's came with Gold swirled dash bezel and gold spokes on the steering wheel. Most of them had Deluxe interior, but there are exceptions, we have seen many with standard interior. In 1977 the exterior emblems used were RED, not gold as many folks think (arrow head on the nose and wheel caps emblems), the door emblems and the shifter emblem all were gold , they were all gold in 1978 and up, not in 1977. 1977 Special Editions came with 15 x 7 snowflake rims with gold painted inserts, 1976 came with gold polycast honeycomb rims. All Y82's came with HURST t tops in 1976 and 1977 , in 1978 you would only find Hurst T-tops on car produced before March 1978, after that they came with bigger t tops from "Fisher" but if you wanted a SE with non tops this was also possible, and the code for that would have been Y81code. So now you know what are the basics to recognize a Special Edition, but honestly that's not enough proof. Now days you can buy all the necessary parts to make any black TA look a like a Y82, this said you need to look further. The only way to know that your car is a real SE is through 2 important papers:

1- THE BUILD SHEET or 2- the WINDOW STICKER

condition

Exterior

The Black and Gold exterior is in mostly original condition. Based on conversations with the previous owner and to the best of our knowledge it is believed that a good portion of the paint on the TA is original paint. The hood bird, special edition decals, and most of the gold stripping appear to be original as well. The paint basically looks in person as it does in the photos. Often Trans Am's will have particularly chipped up front ends, especially original cars; but this car is still in pretty decent shape. Both bumpers still look good considering they appear to be in original condition. The low front spoiler, which is very fragile and prone to damage, is in good condition as one can see in the photos. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. As one can see the paint obviously shows its age and has some checking, chips, and other blemishes. This car was purchased out of Texas and is very solid overall. We have included specific photos of the areas on the car most prone to rust to show how good this one is. Two brothers owned this car for the last 28 years with over 14 of those years spent in Texas. The 15x7 original snow flake wheels are in nice preserved condition with no major curb rash and still have a good finish. The tires were purchased less than one year ago and have nearly full tread left and sized 225/70/15. The trunk is very solid and unmolested and nicely detailed with spare tire, original jack, jack base, lug wrench, original trunk mat, and the difficult to find original Hurst T-top storage bag. Even the original speaker insulation boxes are still in place on this TA.

This Trans Am has a stamping on the radiator core support, which is pictured below. The core support shows a "1 04 77" stamp, or January 1, 1977. This stamping would be correct and original as it precedes the car's build date of the second week of February, 1977 (02D). As one can imagine, if this Trans Am had ever sustained even a minor front end collision this part would have been repaired or replaced. The original stamping is great to see in tact.

Window Date Codes

Windshield: NG - "N" denotes January and "G" denotes 1977 meaning the windshield was made in January of 1977.

Driver: CC - The first "C" denotes November and the second "C" denotes 1976 meaning the driver's side window was made in November of 1976.

Passenger: VC -
"V" denotes December and "T" denotes 1976 meaning the passenger side window was made in December of 1976.

Rear: NG - "N" denotes January and "G" denotes 1977 meaning the rear window was made in December of 1977.

Please note that ALL the glass on this car is date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of the second week of February 1977 (02D). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

The Trans Am looks in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The original black deluxe vinyl interior of the Trans Am looks amazingly well preserved. The seats look in person just as they do in the photos with no rips, split seams, or signs of excessive wear. The carpet also appears to be original and still in good condition overall with no major stains, but a few rips that are visible in the photos. The original dash is in excellent condition with no cracks, fading, or sun damage. The original correct AM/FM stereo still remains in the car along with the factory ordered 8 track player. The stereo still sounds great and most importantly the original dash remains intact and uncut. All interior lights and gauges work as they should, even the clock keeps accurate time. The original door panels look great with no cracks or splits, and both door pulls are solid and in tact. There is s small crack in the center console compartment lid. The headliner is in great shape with no holes, stains, or sagging. The package tray looks great with no warping, fading, or sun damage. This car has not been smoked in; there is no aroma of cigarettes what so ever. The interiors in this era Trans Am are not known the wear well and the excellent condition of this mostly original interior is a true testament to the care this car has received over the years.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Trans Am appears to be in very good mechanical condition. The original numbers matching W72 engine is in great running condition. The car is an exceptional driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. Please view the segment in the video below of the car accelerating onto the expressway, driving at 70mph, and how smooth it all feels. There is no smoke when starting or driving this Special Edition. It starts right away every time, idles well, and runs excellent. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. True dual exhaust with no catalytic converter and headers were installed years ago and give this Trans Am a nice healthy exhaust tone at idle and cruising speeds. This appears to be the only significant modification on this car and can easily be reversed back to factory configuration at any muffler shop. The horn works as do all the interior and exterior lights, wipers, and blower motor for the heater. The speedometer, tachometer, odometer, oil pressure, fuel, and battery gauges all work as they should. The A/C system is factory complete and has been converted to R134a refrigerant. The compressor clicks on as it should when the A/C is turned on, but the belt makes noise. There is a slight exhaust sound from the header on the right side, which is very common with headers. This Trans Am has lots of power being a factory ordered W72 car and handles amazingly well. Several suspension parts have been replaced to improve the ride handling such as; end links, ball joints, sway bar mounts, body mounts, and newer shocks. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially on a beautiful day with the T-tops removed.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1977 PHS Documented Special Edition Trans Am is in mostly original well preserved condition. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell. Anniversary and Special edition GM classics always hold a high premium over their standard counterparts and this is especially true with the SE Trans Am's. Verifiable originally is also extremely important in pricing on these cars and as one can see this Pontiac is documented and undoubtedly a correct SE. This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
