vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is very proud to offer this stunning 1977 PHS Documented Special Edition Trans Am with the original number matching W72 400 ci engine, which is in excellent condition inside and out and priced to sell. This Trans Am is the epitome of cool and is infamous from its staring role in the Smokey and the Bandit movie. Everywhere you go in this car you will get fond looks and thumbs up, its a true piece of authentic American History. This SE Trans Am is extremely rare being a factory ordered hardtop with 4 speed manual transmission, one of only 384 ever produced. This rare SE has only 30,950 original miles. It was sold new by Wikel Motors in Reno Nevada, the original plate from the dealer is still with the car today. We purchased the car from a gentleman in central California who said that the car has spent its entire life out west. Western cars are not exposed to the harsh winters and harsh elements that Midwestern and eastern cars can suffer from. Vintage cars from western states will tend to not have rust and will be usually cleaner and in nicer condition overall. This SE is in excellent original condition with a newer repaint with correct decals and pin stripping applied. This Trans Am looks great, runs awesome, and is fun to drive. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Trans Am that is ready to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable value. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come. This Trans Am is finished in the beautiful and desirable color combinations of Black Starlite paint with Gold SE stripping over Black deluxe cloth interior. This is the factory color scheme as verified on the trim tag pictured below as well as the PHS documentation. The low original mileage is verified not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, stating the mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos and video below to get a true sense of clean and nice this Trans Am really is.

Please Please note that this Trans Am is numbers matching meaning the last six digits of he VIN are stamped on the engine block "27N188224," which is pictured below. Also stamped on the block is the code "WA," which is correct for an L78 400ci W72 High Performance engine with an 4 speed manual transmission. The car rolled off the assembly line during the first week of April 1977, verified by the build date of the trim tag of "04A." The transmission is also original to the car and also stamped with the last six digits of the VIN and pictured below. The casting date of the transmission is "3-4-77," which is correct as it predates the build date of the car and is pictured below.

As a side note, this Trans Am is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our classics come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Pontiac, just give us a call.

Special Edition Y81 & Y82 :1976-1978

Let me start saying that 1976 was the first year for Special Editions, in 1976 Pontiac would celebrate their 50th anniversary, and by the way they built very few of them, therefore considered rare. 1977 was the year the movie Smokey and the Bandit was released and they used a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am Special Edition in that film, making the 1977 TA an instant hit . We don't know for sure why, but Pontiac did not stamped the code Y82 on the cowl tags, at least I have not seen any in 76-77 models, so here is some tips to help you figure if your car is SE or not. All Y82 Trans Ams had black exterior (cowl tag must show 19L 19U), they all had Gold Birds decals, German style lettering , Gold pin stripping all around and Gold front grilles. The interior was not necessarily black, we have seen and restored SE's with red interior, white , Tan. As per interior, all the SE's came with Gold swirled dash bezel and gold spokes on the steering wheel. Most of them had Deluxe interior, but there are exceptions, we have seen many with standard interior. In 1977 the exterior emblems used were RED, not gold as many folks think (arrow head on the nose and wheel caps emblems), the door emblems and the shifter emblem all were gold , they were all gold in 1978 and up, not in 1977. 1977 Special Editions came with 15 x 7 snowflake rims with gold painted inserts, 1976 came with gold polycast honeycomb rims. All Y82's came with HURST t tops in 1976 and 1977 , in 1978 you would only find hurst t tops on car produced before March 1978, after that they came with bigger t tops from "Fisher" but if you wanted a SE with non tops this was also possible, and the code for that would have been Y81code. So now you know what are the basics to recognize a Special Edition, but honestly that's not enough proof. Now days you can buy all the necessary parts to make any black TA look a like a Y82, this said you need to look further. The only way to know that your car is a real SE is through 2 important papers:

1- THE BUILD SHEET or 2- the WINDOW STICKER

condition

Exterior

The Black and Gold exterior is in very nice driver condition. A professional repaint was completed a few years ago with new decals and pinstripping applied. As one can see in the photos, the paint has an awesome gloss, dazzling shine, and smooth finish. This Trans Am was originally purchased in Nevada and is very solid with no visible signs of rust what so ever. Often times Trans Am's will have particularly chipped up front ends; this car does not. The low front spoiler, which is very fragile and prone to damage, is in excellent condition as one can see in the photos. Both bumpers are in good shape with no flaking paint or spider webbing. The 15x7 snow flake wheels are newly refinished and are in excellent condition with no curb rash and have great shine and finish. The center caps are the correct stainless steel caps that are in excellent shape and the lug nuts are correct and in excellent shape as well. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There may be some very small blemishes that were too small to faint to even show up in photos, but nothing that is really noticeable from five feet away. The tires are literally brand new BF Goodrich radial TA's sized 225/70/15 with less than 20 miles on them. All weather stripping and window sweeps are in good useable condition. The trunk is solid, complete and nicely detailed with spare tire, jack and accessories with original correct trunk mat.

This Trans Am has a stamping on the radiator core support, which is pictured below, but difficult to read. The core support appears to show a "11 03 76" stamp, or November 11, 1976. This stamping would be correct and original as it precedes the car's build date of the first week of April, 1977 (04A). As one can imagine, if this Trans Am had ever sustained even a minor front end collision this part would have been repaired or replaced. The original stamping is great to see in tact

The Trans Am looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The black cloth deluxe interior of this Trans Am looks splendid. The seat covers are in great condition with no excessive wear, stains, or seam splits. The carpet is in good condition with no major stains. The carpet does show a bit of wear in a few areas, but as one can see in the photos it is not very noticeable at all and covered by the floor mats. The original dash is in excellent condition with no cracks, fading, or sun damage. The two prong Clarion radio sounds amazing and the dash remains un cut for stereo installation, and comes with brand new 6x9 rear speakers. All interior lights and gauges work as they should with the obvious exception of the clock. The original door panels look excellent with no cracks or splits. The headliner is newly replaced with the correct material and in excellent condition with no holes or stains and no sagging. The package tray is freshly replaced as well and is in as new condition with no warping, fading, or sun damage. The pedal pads show wear consistent for a car with about 31,000 miles. This car has not been smoked in and there is no aroma of cigarettes what so ever.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Trans Am is in very good mechanical condition and it is ready to be enjoyed. The original numbers matching engine is in great running condition with only 30,950 original miles on the odometer. The AC system was completely serviced in 2012 for $796 and blows cold. In 2010 the heater core was replaced and so was radiator and thermostat(receipts for work included). This Trans AM still retains its original catalytic converter and a Flowmaster muffler, which gives the car a healthy note as one can hear in the video, but is not too loud. The car even passed California's strict emissions test (certificate included) when it had 30,320 miles. This Trans Am is an exceptional driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. There is no smoke when starting or driving the car. It starts right away every time, idles well, and runs excellent. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. The horn works as do all the interior and exterior lights, wipers, and even the a/c blows cold. The speedometer, tachometer, odometer, oil pressure, fuel, and battery gauges all work as they should. This Trans Am has lots of power being a factory ordered W72 high performance engine car and handles amazingly. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially on a beautiful day rowing through the gears.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1977 PHS Documented Special Edition Trans Am is in terrific condition. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell. Anniversary and Special edition GM classics always hold a high premium over their stand counterparts and this is especially true with the SE Trans Am's. Verifiable originality is also extremely important in pricing on these cars and as one can see this Pontiac is documented and undoubtedly a correct SE. This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes. The value of Special Edition Pontiacs, or "Bandit Cars" as some call them, is currently skyrocketing. At the most recent Mecum sale in Anaheim, CA a less desirable 1981 SE with the 305ci bid up to $38k and did not sell. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
