vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is extremely proud to offer this amazingly low original mile 1979 Trans Am survivor which is in excellent condition inside and out and priced to sell. This completely numbers matching Trans Am is in virtually like new condition in every way and has only 6,545 original miles. This Trans Am was well preserved throughput its 36 years of ownership by Firebird enthusiasts to maintain a factory fresh and correct appearance in every way and detail and comes with a folder of extensive original documentation such as build sheet, PHS documentation, original owners warranty card, owner‚€™s manual, etc. This low mile survivor Trans Am is a time capsule and an investment grade vehicle that is in showroom condition. One can even see how clean the car is underneath in the many photos below of the car on a lift. Not only is the condition spectacular, the car is also well optioned and absolutely loaded with desire items like WS7 Special Handling Package, Deluxe Interior, A/C, Power Locks, Power Windows, 8-Track player, etc.  Also, everything on the car works.

Throughout the entire F-Body market right now, this is one of the nicest and most desirable Trans Am's available. There is no way this car could be duplicated with this level of originality or quality for anything near our asking price, cars like this are only original once. This Trans Am looks great, runs awesome, and is fun to drive. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Firebird that is ready to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable value. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come as these F-Body's are appreciating fast. This Trans Am is finished in the beautiful and desirable color combinations of Starlight Black Paint over Carmine Red Deluxe cloth interior. This is the factory color scheme as verified on the trim tag pictured below as well as the original build sheet, which is also still with the car and pictured below, and PHS documentation. The car is absolutely stunning in photos and even more so in person. The very low original mileage is verified not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, that states the mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos, video, and information below to get a true sense of how spectacular this Trans Am really is.

Please note that this Trans Am is has a completely numbers matching driveline. That means that all of codes, dates, and stamping are original or correct for the car and in correct chronological order. Most importantly the engine is original to the car. The last six digits of the VIN, 165470, are stamped on the engine block and pictured below indicating that this is the original engine that was installed in the car brand new at the factory. The full stamping is "29N165470" and "2" indicates the Pontiac division of GM, the "9" is the model year, 1979, and the "N" is the plant where the car was produced, Norwood. The transmission is also numbers matching with the last 6 digits of the VIN stamped on the main case and pictured below. The transmission date code is "J 9 D 03 D." The "J" the plant that made the transmission. The "9" is the last digit of the calendar year, 1979. The first "D" is the fourth month of the year and the "03" is the third day of the month. The second "D" means it was made during the day shift. This means the transmission was made during the day shift on April 3, 1979. This is correct as it predates the car's build date of the second week of April 1979 (04B).

As a side note, this Trans Am is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our classics come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Pontiac, just give us a call.

model description

A new styling treatment to the front end was the most striking change for the 1979 Trans Am, laying back the nose at a 22-degree angle from the "Batmobile's" 16-degree angle for better aerodynamics. The Trans Am became a "bottom breather", picking up some fresh air for cooling at the bumper grilles, the remaining amount from underneath the front bumper. The traditional grille between the headlamps was gone, replaced by a pair mounted in the bumper pad extensions. The grilles were in a matte black and contained the turn signal/park lamp lenses in the upper outer corners. The now common four rectangular headlamps were each set in deep recesses, surrounded by low gloss bezels. The Pontiac crest continued to reside in the center of the front fascia.

In addition to the styling change, a bright spot to the front end restyle was a deeper front spoiler, now made of a flexible material rather than the hard plastic of the '77-78's. The change in material made it a bit more friendly to curb stones and parking lot dips. The spoiler actually was responsible for a major portion of the cooling air which was channeled to the radiator. Larger wheel air deflectors (or spats) were fitted, blending with the new spoiler.

The most drastic and best looking change to the rear had to be the tail lamp assemblies. The lamps now stretched corner to corner, with a hinged fuel filler door in the center. While this may seem enough of a change, the big news was that the tail lamps had a "blacked out" look; at least until the lights were activated, then the red was proudly broadcast. For 1979, this was major cool.

Exterior

The Starlight Black exterior is in excellent original condition with amazing paint and decals. As one can see in the photos the finish has a dazzling gloss, deep shine, and smooth glass-like finish. We believe this to be actual original paint, we have seen no paint lines anywhere on the car and no evidence of paintwork. The way this car shows is a testament to the care this car has received over 36 years of pampered ownership. The factory original spot welds are still visible in the wheel wells and pictured below. Often Trans Am's will have particularly chipped up front ends; this car does not. The low front spoiler, which is very fragile and prone to damage, is in excellent condition as one can see in the photos. Both bumpers are in excellent shape with no flaking paint or spider web cracks. The factory 15x8 Snowflake wheels are in excellent condition with a brilliant finish and absolutely no curb rash. The center caps, wheel emblems, and lug nuts look brand new. The tires are original Uniroyal Steel Belted Radials that are still in excellent condition with no dry rot and still have almost full tread left. We have driven the car on the back roads and at highway speeds as seen in the video below and they function very well and the car drives beautifully. You will surely stand out at any car gathering with original tires still on your car, a true testament to the care this car has received over 36 years. After that many years the paint is obviously not perfect, but is in amazing condition as on can see in the photos. All of the weather stripping is in excellent well preserved condition. The trunk is complete, looks new, and fully detailed with spare tire, inflator canister, jack, base, and original trunk mat; it doesn't look like anyone has every used the trunk.

This Trans Am has a stamping on the radiator core support, which is pictured below. The core support shows a "2 8 79" stamp, or February 8, 1979. This stamping would be correct and original as it precedes the car's build date of the second week of April, 1979 (04B). As one can imagine, if this Trans Am had ever sustained even a minor front end collision this part would have been repaired or replaced. The original stamping is great to see in tact. On this Trans Am even both front fenders are original and dated from 1979.

The Trans Am looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Window Date Codes

Windshield: LA - "L" denotes March and "A" denotes 1979 meaning the windshield was made in March of 1979.

Driver: LA - The "L" denotes March and the "A" denotes 1979 meaning the driver's side window was made in March of 1979.

Passenger: LA -
"L" denotes March and "A" denotes 1979 meaning the passenger's side window was made in March of 1979.

Rear: LA -
"L" denotes March and "A" denotes 1979 meaning the rear window was made in March of 1979.

Please note that ALL of the the glass on this car, even the windshield, is date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of this second week of April, 1979 (04B). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.

Interior

The Carmine Red Deluxe Cloth interior of the Trans Am looks utterly splendid and factory new; the car still smells new inside. The original seat covers show no wear in any way, are not faded in any area, and have no seam splits or stress cracks. These are the original Lombardy cloth hobnail seat covers with the correct grain pattern, not some cheap aftermarket replacements. The carpet is also in "like new" condition with no stains, rips, or holes. The original dash and components look amazing and are in showroom condition, frankly it's one of the best dash, bezel, radio, glovebox, and gauge cluster we have ever seen in person. Even the glove box light works. The original AM/FM 8 track radio still resides in its factory position and the dash remains unaltered. The radio and speakers are original to the car and still work properly and sound great, and even the 8 track still works as one cans see in the video below. All of the gauge lenses are crisp, clear, and show no wear at all. The original door panels look excellent with no cracks or splits, and both door pulls are solid and in tact. The headliner is in great shape with no holes or stains and no sagging. The original package tray looks great with no warping, fading, or sun damage. Everything works like new including the Power windows and Power door locks which are notorious for not working properly or very slowly. Please note in the video below how both seat belts operate and retract properly. This is a very common problem on this era "F-Body" and a small, but very important, detail most buyers do not think to check. This is the best original interior we have ever seen in person and is a true study of how these cars looked from the factory. This car has not been smoked in; there are no burn marks and no aroma of cigarettes what so ever. These Firebird interiors are not known to wear well and the magnificent condition of this original interior is a testament to the meticulous care and attention this car has received throughout its life by its previous owners.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Trans Am is in excellent mechanical condition; as one would expect with such low mileage everything on car works and it is ready to be enjoyed. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idles well. This Trans Am is an exceptional driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can see the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70 mph, shifting through all the gears, braking to stoplight, accelerating away, and going through some curves. Please note that it shifts properly, drives great, there are no strange vibrations, and the car performs quite well overall. There is no smoke when starting or driving the car. It starts right away every time, idles well, and runs excellent. The brakes are responsive, do not pull to one side or the other, and even the emergency brake works as it should. The engine bay looks factory fresh and all original engine components are detailed and in place as they came from the factory. Please note that the engine compartment still retains all of the factory original finishes and even some factory ink stamps like the one pictured on the front of the left valve cover. Thankfully no one has ever paint bombed the engine or done touch up with a paint can. Even all of the small vacuum lines in the engine compartment are routed correctly and still feature the correct and original colored striped and coding. The flexible air induction pipe is the original and exceptionally rare factory installed unit, not some cheap plastic reproduction. The only non-factory item in the engine compartment is the hood lock visible in the photos. This was a dealer installed option that installed on the car in 1979 when it was brand new by Rinke Pontiac; the original receipt is included with the car and visible in the video below. The horn works as do all the interior and exterior lights, all of the gauges, including the clock, wipers, and indicators. Not only does the clock work properly it keeps accurate time, one of the only times we have every witnessed that. The air conditioning blows cold and is the original R12 style; one can observe the a/c compressor engaging properly in the video below. The speedometer, odometer, oil pressure, fuel, and battery gauges all work as they should. This Trans Am has lots of power and handles amazingly; especially with the WS7 special handling package. It basically feels like a brand new car. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car.

Overall Condition

Overall, this 1979 Trans Am survivor is in excellent award winning condition. Originality and numbers matching are extremely important for cars of this caliber and as one can see it does not get much better than this Trans Am. Cars like this will become more rare and important as time goes by. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell. This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes. The value of these second generation "F-Body" Trans Am's has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

This Trans Am was offered for sale in 2012 by arguably the largest and best Classic Car dealer in the world RK Motors out of Charlotte NC and their asking price was $39,900. Since that time the market for second generation Trans Am's has increased greatly, especially cars of this caliber, which just shows how great of deal we are offering for this car. Their impression of this extremely well preserved car is noted in their ad for the car which can be viewed
here.
