Hills Motorcars is extremely proud to offer this very rare numbers
matching 1979 Trans Am in terrific restored condition and priced to
sell with low actual mileage of only 91,250. This Trans Am is one of
only 2485 Factory 4-speed cars with the L78(W72) high performance
engine and hard top built for 1979. This numbers matching Trans Am
has a PWH stamping on the engine block, which is correct for an L78
400ci. The last six digits of the VIN, 148840, are also stamped on
the block and pictured below indicting this is the original engine
that was installed in the car new. This Trans Am was built for
performance and also comes from the factory with the WS6 special
performance handing package and is a factory AC car. That alone
makes this Trans Am very rare, now factor in that only a few factory
non performance options were ordered makes it ever rarer(see
provided PHS documents pictured below). It looks great, runs
awesome, and is fun to drive, especially on a beautiful day rowing
through the gears. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic
Trans Am that is ready to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable
value. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than
the purchase price in years to come. The car is finished in a
beautiful GM Emerald Green exterior color over Camel Tan standard
interior. This is the not the factory color scheme as verified on
the trim tag pictured below as well as the PHS documents that are
also included and pictured below. The original exterior color for
this car is Starlight Black over Camel Tan standard vinyl interior.
The paint conversion was professionally completed years ago and
still looks amazing today, its really a striking color combination.
The interior is factory correct and brand new including new NOS
camel tan hand built seat covers. The low original mileage is
verified not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear
Ohio title showing the mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the
photos, video, and information below to get a true sense of how
clean and nice this Trans Am really is.
As a side note, this Trans Am is not a dealer auction vehicle.
We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our
classics come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone
that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.
We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the
car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each
picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so
you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a
question about the Pontiac, just give us a call.
A new styling treatment to the front end was the most
striking change for the 1979 Trans Am, laying back the nose
at a 22-degree angle from the "Batmobile's" 16-degree angle
for better aerodynamics. The Trans Am became a "bottom
breather", picking up some fresh air for cooling at the
bumper grilles, the remaining amount from underneath the
front bumper. The traditional grille between the headlamps
was gone, replaced by a pair mounted in the bumper pad
extensions. The grilles were in a matte black and contained
the turn signal/park lamp lenses in the upper outer corners.
The now common four rectangular headlamps were each set in
deep recesses, surrounded by low gloss bezels. The Pontiac
crest continued to reside in the center of the front fascia.
In addition to the styling change, a bright spot to the
front end restyle was a deeper front spoiler, now made of a
flexible material rather than the hard plastic of the
'77-78's. The change in material made it a bit more friendly
to curb stones and parking lot dips. The spoiler actually
was responsible for a major portion of the cooling air which
was channeled to the radiator. Larger wheel air deflectors
(or spats) were fitted, blending with the new spoiler.
The most drastic and best looking change to the rear had
to be the tail lamp assemblies. The lamps now stretched
corner to corner, with a hinged fuel filler door in the
center. While this may seem enough of a change, the big news
was that the tail lamps had a "blacked out" look; at least
until the lights were activated, then the red was proudly
broadcast. For 1979, this was major cool!
WS6 Four Wheel Brakes & performance handling Suspension:
Now that the Firebird reached
significant production levels it could now be offered with
four wheel discs brakes. The four wheel discs became part of
the WS6 Performance Package for 1979 and was very popular.
When you order the W72 400 Engine you were required to get
the WS6 package so all 400/4 speeds for 1979 were equipped
with four wheel disc brakes. The 4 wheel disc brakes for
Firebird were unique to the line and were not derived from
the Corvette 4 wheel disc brakes.
W72 High Performance Pontiac
The last of the true Pontiac
big blocks would be installed in the 1979 Trans Am and
Formula. The 400 production plant had actually been
converted to 301 and 4 cylinder production in 1978 but the
plan was to hold 10,000 400 engines over for the 1979 model.
As it turned out demand for the engine in 1978 was higher
than expected and only 8,672 were retained for 1979. Of
these only 346 were installed into Formulas, 1817 in Tenth
Anniversary Trans Ams, 1107 in Black and Gold Special
Editions, 2917 in other T-Top equipped Trans Ams, and 2485
in Hardtop Trans Ams. The Pontiac big block received an
appropriate send off in the 1979 Firebirds and marked the
end of an era. It Will Not Pass This Way Again was the title
of the article in Car And Driver for January 1979.
Emerald Green exterior is in very nice driver condition. The
entire exterior was just treated a complete professional
detailing including: clay bar treatment, 3 stage buffing
process, all brightwork detailed, and wheels and tires detailed
as well. As one can see in the photos, the paint has a nice
gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. This Trans Am was treated
to a professional re-paint years ago with all new decals
applied. Not sure why the color conversion was performed but the
process was done professionally and very well as all the door
jambs were painted, trunk, inner fenders, etc. The exterior
still looks great today and the body has nice lines and is
solid. Often many Trans Am's will have particularly chipped up
front ends, this car does not, and the nose crest emblem has
just been replaced. There are no major imperfections that have
been intentionally excluded from the photos. There are some
small blemishes that were too faint to show up in the photos,
but nothing that is very noticeable from about five feet away.
Tires are brand new sized 255/60/15 and the snowflake wheels are
beautifully refinished originals. The wheel center caps and lug
nuts are also new. The window fit, which is a common problem on
these f-bodies, it pretty good on this car, but the driver's
door take a little extra pressure to close with the window up.
This may be a product of the new rubber seals. This TA has new
door seals, shaker seal, trunk seal, window sweeps and window
seals. The trunk is very solid and freshly painted with a new
trunk seal and is nicely detailed with spare tire, jack, lug
wrench and accessories, and new trunk mat.
The Trans Am
looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.
The Camel tan standard interior of
the Trans Am looks absolutely splendid. The seats covers are
brand new and hand made out of original NOS material from
1979. They are perfect in every way and look incredible in
the car. These seats have been converted to be able to
recline which is an excellent upgrade and tasteful
modification. The carpet is also brand new with no stains,
rips, or holes. The dash pad is in great condition with no
cracks, fading, warping or sun damage. The door panels are
brand new and look excellent with no cracks or splits, and
both door pulls are solid and in tact. The center console is
also brand new including the shifter plate, console bin and
console armrest cap. The headliner is also new and in great
condition and not sagging at all. The aftermarket Kenwood CD
player with USB and mp3 direct hook ups sounds great and was
just installed. Brand new Kenwood 6x9 speakers are mounted
in the rear deck factory position. All interior plastics are
in very nice shape and are not chalky and have nice factory
texture and grain pattern. A New shifter knob, door pulls
and door handle cups were also just added. This car has not
been smoked in; there is no aroma what so ever. Both seats
recline properly, but the passenger seat back does not tilt
forward. The drivers seat does not adjust forward and back
normally, but can be adjusted and locked into the driver's
desired position. Older Firebird interiors are not known to wear
well, and the excellent quality of this restored interior is
a testament to the excellent care this car has received.
The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the
This Trans Am is
in good mechanical condition and all of the accessories work.
Very importantly the original W72 engine with correct factory
vin stamp on the block remains under the hood. PWH is also
stamped on the block and pictures of both are included below.
The mechanics and the way this car runs and drives are some of
its strongest points. The car is an exceptional driver that
feels great on the road and at highway speeds. There is no smoke
when starting or driving the car. It starts right away every
time, idles well, runs well, and handles great, especially with
the WS6 package. The car shifts well, does not pop out of gear,
and the clutch feels good. The brakes are responsive and do not
pull to one side or the other. Four new brake calipers were
recently installed with new brake pads and hoses. As one can
imagine this was an expensive repair, but now this incredible TA
stops the way it should. A new center link was installed to true
up the front suspension. Recently a heavy duty new radiator was
installed and this TA runs cool even on the hottest of days. All
fluids were just replaced by a seasoned mechanic. Flowmaster
true dual exhaust gives this TA an amazing healthy exhaust note
at idle and all cursing speeds. The engine is very correct,
stock, and unmolested in appearance and the engine bay is clean
and nicely detailed as one can see in the photos. The AC system
is all complete and most likely just needs to be recharged. The
horn works as do all the exterior lights, gauges, wipers, and
blower for the heater. The speedometer, odometer tachometer, oil
pressure, fuel, and battery gauges all work as they should. This
Trans Am has a lot of power and handles amazingly since it is a
factory W72/WS6 car. Not enough can be said as to how much of a
pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the 4-speed
transmission on a beautiful day.
Overall, this 1979 Trans Am is in very
nice restored condition. It is a great value and we have it
priced to sell. The market is very hot on these cars right now.
This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it
goes. The overall condition and rare option package make this
Trans Am especially desirable and difficult to duplicate. The
value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years.
They are all solid investments for a collector. Cars like this
are the Barrett Jackson and Mecum stars of the future. One could
easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more
than the purchase price with minimal effort.
