vehicle description

Seven Hills Motorcars is proud to offer this super rare 1979 Y84 Special Edition Trans Am documented with an original build sheet and trim tag with a strong running 400 ci engine with its original numbers matching 4-Speed transmission. The car is in great driver condition inside and out and priced to sell. This Trans Am is the epitome of cool and is infamous from its staring role in the Smokey and the Bandit movie. Everywhere you go in this car you will get fond looks and thumbs up, its a true piece of authentic American History. This Trans Am is the rarest version of the SE's available today with factory ordered T-Tops and 4 speed manual close ratio transmission coupled with the 301 engine, one of only 213 ever produced. This Trans Am looks great, runs awesome, and is fun to drive. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Trans Am that is ready to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable value.

The market on the Y84 Special Edition Trans Am's is absolutely red hot right now. One could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come. This Trans Am is finished in the beautiful and desirable color combination of Starlight Black with Gold SE stripping over Black Hobnail cloth interior. This is the factory correct color scheme as verified on the trim tag pictured below as well as the original build sheet. Please peruse all of the photos, video, and information, below to get a true sense of nice this Trans Am really is.

Please note that while this Trans Am is not completely numbers matching is does feature a 400ci Pontiac engine dated from 1972. The VIN stamp showing the 1972 date is pictured below. The transmission is correct and original with the last six digits of the VIN stamped on the main case and pictured below. The car rolled off the assembly line during the third week of December 1978; the build date on the trim tag, "12C," is pictured below. All of the trim and color codes on the trim tag are also correct for the car.

As a side note, this Trans Am is not a dealer auction vehicle.  We hand pick each car after careful inspection.  Our classics come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.  We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected.  Please take the time to scrutinize each picture.  We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase.  If you have a question about the Pontiac, just give us a call.

model description

A new styling treatment to the front end was the most striking change for the 1979 Trans Am, laying back the nose at a 22-degree angle from the "Batmobile's" 16-degree angle for better aerodynamics. The Trans Am became a "bottom breather", picking up some fresh air for cooling at the bumper grilles, the remaining amount from underneath the front bumper. The traditional grille between the headlamps was gone, replaced by a pair mounted in the bumper pad extensions. The grilles were in a matte black and contained the turn signal/park lamp lenses in the upper outer corners. The now common four rectangular headlamps were each set in deep recesses, surrounded by low gloss bezels. The Pontiac crest continued to reside in the center of the front fascia.

In addition to the styling change, a bright spot to the front end restyle was a deeper front spoiler, now made of a flexible material rather than the hard plastic of the '77-78's. The change in material made it a bit more friendly to curb stones and parking lot dips. The spoiler actually was responsible for a major portion of the cooling air which was channeled to the radiator. Larger wheel air deflectors (or spats) were fitted, blending with the new spoiler.

The most drastic and best looking change to the rear had to be the tail lamp assemblies. The lamps now stretched corner to corner, with a hinged fuel filler door in the center. While this may seem enough of a change, the big news was that the tail lamps had a "blacked out" look; at least until the lights were activated, then the red was proudly broadcast. For 1979, this was major cool.

condition

Exterior

The Starlight Black and Gold exterior is in great condition. As one can see in the photos, the paint has an awesome gloss, dazzling shine, and deep finish. The decals are in overall very nice shape with no crackling, fading, or peeling. The original 15x7 snow flake wheels are in excellent condition with a great finish and no curb rash. The center caps are correct in stainless steel and are in excellent shape with new lug nuts. The tires are like new with excellent tread and are sized 225/70/15. No major flaws have been intentionally excluded from the photos, there may be some very small blemishes that were too faint to show up in photos, but nothing that is really noticeable from about five feet away. This SE is solid with great lines. We have intentionally included many photos of the underside and the areas that are most prone to rust, such as the lower quarters front and rear as well as the rocker panels, tail panel, and spring perches. The trunk is solid, nicely detailed, and comes with a spare tire and jack, with correct style trunk mat.

This Trans Am has a stamping on the radiator core support, which is pictured below. The core support shows a "10 30 78" stamp, or October 30, 1978. This stamping would be correct and original as it precedes the car's build date of the third week of December, 1978 (12C). As one can imagine, if this Trans Am had ever sustained even a minor front end collision this part would have been repaired or replaced. The original stamping is great to see in tact.

The Trans Am looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The black Vinyl interior of this Trans Am looks very nice. The seats are in great condition with no excessive wear, rips, tears or seam splits. The carpet is in terrific condition with no stains, rips or holes. The dash is in good condition with no fading or sun damage. The OEM style am/fm cassette stereo looks great in the dash and most importantly the dash remains uncut for a modern stereo installation, and comes with a set of newer 6x9 rear speakers. The cassette player works on the stereo but the stereo gets poor radio reception. The door panels look decent with no splits or cracks and both door pulls are solid and in tact. The headliner is in excellent shape with no tears and is not sagging at all. The package tray is in good condition with no warping, fading, or sun damage. This car has not been smoked in and there is no aroma of cigarettes what so ever. Please note in the video below how both seat belts operate and retract properly. This is a very common problem on this era "F-Body" and a small, but very important, detail most buyers do not think to check.

The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This Trans Am is in good mechanical condition and it is ready to be enjoyed. The 400ci engine was rebuilt about 11 years ago per included receipt for a cost of $2200. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idles well. It drives terrifically and it is tight on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, braking to stoplight, going through some curves, and shifting through all the gears. Please note that there are no strange noises or vibrations and the car performs quite well overall. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. The transmission shifts crisply and does not pop out of gear. The clutch feels good and operates smoothly. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. Also, the engine compartment is clean and nicely detailed as one can see in the photos. This TA has true dual exhaust with no catalytic converter and Flowmaster 40 mufflers. This SE sounds healthy at idle and cruising speeds with an excellent true muscle car tone. All of the gauges work with the obvious exception of the clock; the horn does not work. The wipers work and so does the blower motor for the heater, but not on all speeds. This car is a factory non AC car which really unclutters the engine bay area. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially on a beautiful day rowing through the gears with the T-tops removed.

Overall Condition

This 1979 SE Trans Am is in nice condition and is a priced to sell. It is exceptionally rare being only on of 213 ever made. The market for the Special Edition Trans Am is very strong right now, especially for super rare examples like this 1979 4-Speed Y84. It is a great value and will only appreciate over time. This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in recent years and this one is especially investment grade. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.

Thank you for looking and please do not hesitate to email or call with any questions.
