Documented Y84 Special Edition Trans Am with the original numbers
matching W72(L78) 400 ci engine and numbers matching 4-Speed

from its staring role in the Smokey and the Bandit movie. Everywhere

piece of authentic American History. This Trans Am is one of the
most desirable SE's available today with factory ordered T-Tops and
4 speed manual close ratio transmission coupled with the potent W72
high performance Pontiac 400 engine, one of only 1107 ever produced.
This Trans Am looks great, runs awesome, and is fun to drive. This
is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Trans Am that is ready
to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable value.
entire F-Body market right now, this is one of the most desirable
Trans Am's available. Not only is this a highly desirable Special
Edition, but it has all of the most sought after options like
T-Tops, 400ci engine, 4-Speed manual close ratio transmission, and
WS6 special performance package, all of which are verified as
original by the PHS documentation and window sticker pictured below.
In fact this SE is so loaded with factory ordered options that the
enclosed window sticker is two pages long with an original sale
price of $10,021.55. The market on the Y84 Special Edition Trans
Am's is absolutely red hot right now. One could easily buy this car
now and sell it for more than the purchase price in years to come.
This Trans Am is finished in the beautiful and desirable color
combination of Starlight Black with Gold SE stripping over Black
Hobnail cloth interior. This is the factory correct color scheme as
verified on the trim tag pictured below as well as the PHS
documentation. Please peruse all of the photos, video, and
information, below to get a true sense of clean and nice this Trans
Am really is.
Please note that this Trans Am is numbers
matching meaning the last six digits of he VIN, "29L145971," are
stamped on the engine block, which is pictured below. The "2"
indicates the Pontiac division of GM, the "9" is the model year,
1979, and the "L" is the plant where the car was produced, Van Nuys.
Also stamped on the block is the code "PWH," which is correct for an
400ci W72 High Performance engine with an 4 speed manual
transmission. The transmission is also correct and original with the
last six digits of the VIN stamped on the main case and pictured
below. The car rolled off the assembly line during the third week of
January 1979; the build date on the trim tag, "01C," is pictured
below. All of the trim and color codes on the trim tag are also
correct for the car.
As a side note, this Trans Am is not a dealer auction vehicle.
We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our
classics come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone
that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.
We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the
car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each
picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so
you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a
question about the Pontiac, just give us a call.
A new styling treatment to the front end was the most striking
change for the 1979 Trans Am, laying back the nose at a 22-degree
angle from the "Batmobile's" 16-degree angle for better
aerodynamics. The Trans Am became a "bottom breather", picking up
some fresh air for cooling at the bumper grilles, the remaining
amount from underneath the front bumper. The traditional grille
between the headlamps was gone, replaced by a pair mounted in the
bumper pad extensions. The grilles were in a matte black and
contained the turn signal/park lamp lenses in the upper outer
corners. The now common four rectangular headlamps were each set in
deep recesses, surrounded by low gloss bezels. The Pontiac crest
continued to reside in the center of the front fascia.
addition to the styling change, a bright spot to the front end
restyle was a deeper front spoiler, now made of a flexible material
rather than the hard plastic of the '77-78's. The change in material
made it a bit more friendly to curb stones and parking lot dips. The
spoiler actually was responsible for a major portion of the cooling
air which was channeled to the radiator. Larger wheel air deflectors
(or spats) were fitted, blending with the new spoiler.
most drastic and best looking change to the rear had to be the tail
lamp assemblies. The lamps now stretched corner to corner, with a
hinged fuel filler door in the center. While this may seem enough of
a change, the big news was that the tail lamps had a "blacked out"
look; at least until the lights were activated, then the red was
proudly broadcast. For 1979, this was major cool.
Starlight Black and Gold exterior is in superb condition. As one
can see in the photos, the paint has an awesome gloss, dazzling
shine, and deep finish. The decals are in overall very nice
shape with no crackling, fading, or peeling. The original 15x8
snow flake wheels are in great condition with a great finish. The center caps are correct in stainless
steel and are in excellent shape with new lug nuts. The tires
are literally brand new with less than 500 miles driven on them.
No major flaws have been intentionally excluded from the photos,
there may be some very small blemishes that were too faint to
show up in photos, but nothing that is really noticeable from
five feet away. This SE is totally solid with great lines. We
have intentionally included many photos of the underside and the
areas that are most prone to rust, such as the lower quarters
front and rear as well as the rocker panels, door jams, and
spring perches, to show how nice this car looks. The trunk is solid, nicely detailed, and totally
complete with the compact spare tire, inflator bottle, jack,
jack base, bumper hook, and correct original style trunk mat.
The original GM T-Tops bags are also included with the car and
This Trans Am has a stamping on the
radiator core support, which is pictured below. The core support
shows a "12 11 78 stamp, or December 11, 1978. This stamping
would be correct and original as it precedes the car's build
date of the third week of January, 1979 (01C). As one can
imagine, if this Trans Am had ever sustained even a minor front
end collision this part would have been repaired or replaced.
The original stamping is great to see in tact.

this car has had no major accident history
and never sustained significant damage.
The Trans Am looks just as good in person as it does in
The black Hobnail interior of this
Trans Am looks splendid. The seats are in excellent like new
condition with no excessive wear, rips, tears or seam
splits. These covers were hand made mostly out of NOS
material. The carpet is in terrific condition with no
stains, rips or holes. The original dash is in good
condition with no fading or sun damage. The OEM style stereo
works and most importantly the dash remains uncut for a
modern stereo installation, and comes with a set of new 3way
Infinity rear speakers. All interior lights and gauges work
as they should; even the clock works. The original door
panels look great with no splits or cracks and both door
pulls are solid and in tact. The headliner is in excellent
shape with no tears and is not sagging at all. The package
tray is in excellent condition with no warping, fading, or
sun damage. This car has not been smoked in and there is no
aroma of cigarettes what so ever. Please note in the video
below how both seat belts operate and retract properly. This
is a very common problem on this era "F-Body" and a small,
but very important, detail most buyers do not think to
check. These Firebird interiors are not known to wear well
over time and the excellent condition of this interior is a
testament to the meticulous care and attention this car has
received throughout its life.
The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the
This Trans Am is
in excellent mechanical condition and it is ready to be enjoyed.
The original numbers matching engine is in great running
condition. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and
idles well. It drives terrifically and it is tight on the road
and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the
car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, braking to
stoplight, going through some curves, and shifting through all
the gears. Please note that there are no strange noises or
vibrations and the car performs quite well overall. There is no
blue smoke when starting or driving the car. The transmission
shifts crisply and does not pop out of gear. The clutch feels
good and operates smoothly. The brakes are responsive and do not
pull to one side or the other. Also, the engine compartment is
clean and nicely detailed as one can see in the photos. True
dual exhaust was just added with no catalytic converter and new
Flowmaster 40 mufflers. This SE sounds healthy at idle and
cruising speeds with an excellent true muscle car tone. All the
interior and exterior lights work as they should as do the
wipers, power windows, blower motor, and even the a/c blows
cold. One can observe the a/c compressor engaging properly in
the video below. The speedometer, tachometer, odometer, oil
pressure, fuel, and battery gauges all work as they should; even
the clock works and keeps accurate time. The
horn works intermittingly and the power door locks do not work
properly. This Trans Am has lots of power being a factory
ordered W72 high performance engine car and handles amazingly
well being a factory ordered WS6 car. Not enough can be said as
to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially on
a beautiful day rowing through the gears with the t tops
this 1979 SE Trans Am is in
terrific condition and is a priced to sell. The market for the Special Edition Trans
Am is very strong right now especially for an original
400ci 4-Speed example like this TA. Numbers matching is
very important in this market, especially on a rare and
premium example like a 1979 4-Speed Y84, and this car is
very correct with VIN stamped on the engine block and
transmission. It is a great
value and will only appreciate over time. This Trans Am
is the one to have due to the infamous and iconic color
combination, rareity, the originality, and its well preserved
stock appearance really adds to its value. This car
turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes.
The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in
recent years and this one is especially investment
grade. They are all solid investments for a collector or
the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett
Jackson and Mecum stars of the future. One could easily
enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for
more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
