Y84 Special Edition (SE) Trans Am in spectacular condition with
only 71,260 original miles. The market on Special Edition Trans Ams
is absolutely red hot right now and this example is one of the best
available on the market today. This Trans Am features a recent
professional repaint that looks absolutely stunning. Not only does
this Trans Am have beautiful paint but it's also extremely solid
with great lines. Everything on the Trams Am works; even the clock
and the a/c. It looks great, runs awesome, and is a pleasure to
drive. This is an excellent opportunity to own a classic Trans Am
that is ready to be used and enjoyed at an unbeatable value. One
could easily buy this car now and sell it for more than the purchase
price in years to come. This Trans Am is finished in the beautiful
and desirable color combination of Starlight Black (19) with SE
pinstripes and Gold decals over Camel Hobnail cloth (62B) interior.
This is also the correct and original color scheme as verified by
the codes on the trim tag and build sheet both pictured below. The
low original mileage is verified not only by the condition of the
car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, showing the
mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos, video, and
other information below to get a true sense of clean and nice this
Trans Am really is.
Trans Am comes with the original build sheet, which is
pictured below and in excellent condition. It is compete
legible and very important to have as it verifies all of the
high desirable options on the car as original. Very clearly
visible on the build sheet is the RPO code "Y84," which
authenticates this Trans Am as a true and original Special
Edition. The last six digits of the car's VIN, 100936, are
also on the build sheet indicating this is the correct build
sheet for this Trans Am.
Please note that this Trans Am
is "numbers matching." That means that the engine in the car
is original and the same unit that was installed at the
factory. The last six digits of the VIN, 100936, are stamped
on the engine block and pictured below indicating that this
is the original engine that was installed in the car brand
new at the factory. The full stamping is "29N100936" and "2"
indicates the Pontiac division of GM, the "9" is the model
year, 1979, and the "N" is the plant where the car was
produced, Norwood, OH. The paint and interior trim codes
are also correct for this color combination. This Trans Am rolled off the assembly
line during the first week of September in 1978 (09A).
The transmission is also correct and
original as well with the last six digits of the VIN stamped
on the main case and pictured below. The transmission date code is also
pictured below, "9M23N." The "9" is the model year, 1979. The
"M" indicates the month, the "23" is the day of the month,
and the "N" is the shift so the transmission was made
on August 23, 1978 during the night shift.
As a side note, this Trans Am is not a dealer auction vehicle.
We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our
classics come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone
that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did.
We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the
car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each
picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so
you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a
question about the Pontiac, just give us a call.
A new styling treatment to the front end was the most striking
change for the 1979 Trans Am, laying back the nose at a 22-degree
angle from the "Batmobile's" 16-degree angle for better
aerodynamics. The Trans Am became a "bottom breather", picking up
some fresh air for cooling at the bumper grilles, the remaining
amount from underneath the front bumper. The traditional grille
between the headlamps was gone, replaced by a pair mounted in the
bumper pad extensions. The grilles were in a matte black and
contained the turn signal/park lamp lenses in the upper outer
corners. The now common four rectangular headlamps were each set in
deep recesses, surrounded by low gloss bezels. The Pontiac crest
continued to reside in the center of the front fascia.
addition to the styling change, a bright spot to the front end
restyle was a deeper front spoiler, now made of a flexible material
rather than the hard plastic of the '77-78's. The change in material
made it a bit more friendly to curb stones and parking lot dips. The
spoiler actually was responsible for a major portion of the cooling
air which was channeled to the radiator. Larger wheel air deflectors
(or spats) were fitted, blending with the new spoiler.
most drastic and best looking change to the rear had to be the tail
lamp assemblies. The lamps now stretched corner to corner, with a
hinged fuel filler door in the center. While this may seem enough of
a change, the big news was that the tail lamps had a "blacked out"
look; at least until the lights were activated, then the red was
proudly broadcast. For 1979, this was major cool.
Starlight Black exterior is in outstanding restored condition.
This Trans Am was treated to a recent repaint with all new
correct factory decals. This repaint was professionally done and
the decals and SE stripping look excellent. As one can see in
the photos, the paint has a excellent gloss, deep shine, and
smooth glass-like finish. The Gold snowflake wheels are in
excellent condition with a nice finish and no curb rash. The
tires are literally brand new with les than 50 miles on them.
Often many Trans Am's will have particularly chipped up front
ends; this car does not and even the low front spoiler is in
great condition as one can see in the photos. Both bumpers are
in very nice shape with no spider-webbing or flaking paint.
There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally
excluded from the photos. There may be some small blemishes that
were too faint to show up in photos, but nothing that is really
noticeable from about five feet away. As one can seen in the
many photos of the underside, this Trans Am is totally solid. We
have also included specific photos of the spring perches, lower
front and rear quarters, and other areas on the car most prone
to rust. The trunk is complete with a correct trunk mat, space
saver spare, inflator bottle, jack, jack base, and bumper hook.
With the spectacular paint, T-Tops, and the beautiful and
iconic color combination this is truly one of the best looking
Trans Ams out there. I cannot count the number of compliments I
have received while driving this car around. It was actually a
bit difficult to photograph the car because the paint has such a
mirror shine and is so reflective.
Trans Am has a stamping on the radiator core support,
which is pictured below. The core support shows a "6
78" stamp, or June 15, 1978. This stamping would be
correct and original as it precedes the car's build date
of the first week of September, 1978 (09A). As one can imagine, if this Trans Am had ever
sustained even a minor front end collision this part
would have been repaired or replaced. The original
stampings are great to see in tact.
Window Date Codes
Please note that
ALL of the the glass on this Trans Am, even
both T-Tops, is date coded and original as each piece
predates the car's body build date of this first week of
September, 1978 (09A). Original glass is a good
indication that this car has had no major accident
and never sustained significant damage.

The Camel Hobnail cloth interior of
the Trans Am looks fantastic. The seats look just as good in
person as they do in the photos with no tears, rips, or
excessive wear. The carpet also looks nice with no stains,
tears, or holes. The dash and console are in great shape
with no cracks, fading, or sun damage. The headliner is in
awesome shape with no holes or stains and is not sagging at
all. The package tray looks great with no fading or
wrinkles. The door panels look good overall and both door
pulls are solid and in tact. This car has not been smoked
in; there is no aroma of cigarettes what so ever. Please
note in the video below how both seat belts operate and
retract properly. This is a very common problem on this era
"F-Body" and a small, but very important, detail most buyers
do not think to check. Firebird interiors are not known to
wear well and the excellent condition of this mostly
original interior is a huge testament to the meticulous care
this Trans Am has received throughout its life.
This Trans Am
appears to be in very good overall mechanical condition. It is a nice
driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. The
car starts right away every time and runs well. In
the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the
highway up to about 70 mph, shifting through all the gears,
braking to a stoplight, and going through some curves. Please
note that there are no strange noises or vibrations and the car
performs quite well overall. There is no
smoke when starting or driving the car. It runs cool and does
not overheat. Also, the engine is clean, beautifully detailed,
complete, and correct as one can see from the photos.
works as do the indicators, exterior lights, interior lights, wipers,
rear window defogger, and blower for the
heater and a/c on all speeds. All of the gauges work and even
the clock runs. One can observe the a/c compressor
clicking on and engaging properly in the video. This Trans Am has lots of power
with the 403ci V8 and handles
great. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is
to drive this car, especially with the T-Tops out on a beautiful
